  • 17. FOCUS: Family Resiliency TrainingFOCUS (Families Over Coming Under Stress™) provides resiliency training to military childrenand families. It teaches practical skills to meet the challenges of deployment and reintegration, tocommunicate and solve problems effectively, and to successfully set goals together and create ashared family story. Families are directly impacted when a parent returns with significant levels ofcombat operational stress. Changes can be upsetting to children and spouses, and affect parent-ingand marital relation-ships. FOCUS helps families understand how reactions to deployment re-minders can influence relationships and teaches skills to deal with them. Developed by a UCLA-Harvard team, FOCUS teaches military children and families affect-ed by multiple deployments tounderstand their emotional reactions, communicate more clearly, solve problems more effectively, and set and achieve their goals. Parents and children may be able to learn to use tools that will bet-ter prepare them for each new deployment. These dynamics can put a big strain on communication by in-creasing the likelihood of arguments. This causes an increase in isolation and avoidance, which decreasesphysical connection and intimacy. These concerns can become exacerbated for military couples becausethey cope with multiple deployments, long separations because of schools and trainings, and many transi-tions due to relocations. It is very important to keep the lines of communication open, with healthy dia-logue. Here are 5 quick tips.1. Make time each day to talk and spend time together. Keep the conversation light, and dont tryto tackle tough subjects like the family budget. During these times you want to communicate by sharing, laughing, and enjoying each others company. You should schedule a time to talk about tough subjects, giv-ing more time to prepare your thoughts, ideas and concerns. This will help you avoid arguments and resent-ment.2. Dont talk or try to strategize a problem when you are exhausted or in a rush. This will onlylead to confusion and disagreement. Many couples want to do well and solve problems, but dont realizethey are sabotaging the relationship when they choose the wrong time to communicate.3. Use the speaker-listener technique. For example, one person talks while the other person listenswith no interruptions. Additionally, the listener paraphrases what the person just said to make sure they getthe message. The main point is to acknowledge that you "hear" the person, not necessarily that you agree.4. It is very important to avoid anger and escalation in all situations. Taking a time-out ishealthy and necessary to avoid any escalation. Simply say, "Time out -- I need a break." Dont be in a rush tocontinue the conversation; wait until you both cool down.5. Professional counseling or therapy is great for couples who are having marital discord, and communication problems. I highly recommend therapy for couples who due to conflict are livingseparately, sleeping in separate rooms, experiencing a lack of intimacy etc.
