Point plus Partners-An Online Media & Security consulting firm
responds: To truth behind Itunes Hacks & Mysterious Itunes
generator
Point Plus Partners, and online Media and Security consulting company is responding
to an interesting story about iTunes gift cards that are being sold for 50-70% off their
street price on many popular consumer auction sites. However, late last week the
media had begun to circulate several questional reports on exactly how these attacks
took place. In numerous reports they claim, that a group of chinese hackers had
discovered the secret alogrithem used to issue these cards. However, from a
security standpoint if this were true it would be virtually impossible to detect which
gift cards were legitimate and which ones were illegal.

to an interesting story about iTunes gift cards that are being sold for 50-70% off their

media had begun to circulate several questional reports on exactly how these attacks
took place. In numerous reports they claim, that a group of chinese hackers had
discovered the secret alogrithem used to issue these cards. However, from a security
standpoint if this were true it would be virtually impossible to detect which gift cards
were legitimate and which ones were illegal. Based on our research after purchasing
a guide to resell these cards off of a popular consumer auction site. Our security
experts determined that the cards were being purchased using stolen credit cards by
Chinese criminals. Since, in order for the itunes gift card to be activated it must be
purchased and later activated by Apples internal billing system. With this in mind it's
easy to see how these criminals are able to sell a $100 gift card for 50-70% off the list
price. By purchasing these fraudulent itunes gift cards using stolen credit cards, and
going on Apple's website to activate the code that is valid between 24-48 hours,
these criminals are able to scam unwitting consumers into beleiving they are getting
$100 itunes gift card for a fraction of the list price. We first reported this to Apple
itunes retail store team on January 19, 2009 and we were told they were looking into
the matter. If you have been scammed or have had your itunes account deactivated
from using a stolen gift card's, it is recommended that you contact the Internet Crime
Complaint Center (IC3) http://www.ic3.gov.
