Trolley Shelter

 1. 1. TROLLEY SHELTER/GUIDE HOUSE DESIGNED BY LESLIE BRYCE FOR THE TROLLEY MUSEUM 89 EAST STRAND KINGSTON, NY 12401 www.tmny.org DRAWING BY LESLIE BRYCE & SKETCHUP RENDERING BY JOHN KOLAR
 2. 2. FROM 1987 TO 1990, THE TROLLEY MUSEUM CONSTRUCTED THE BUILDING THAT CURRENTLY HOUSES THE VISITOR CENTER, OFFICES, SHOP AND UP TO EIGHT TROLLEY CARS. THANKS TO A GRANT FROM THE NEW YORK DEPARTMENT OF STATE, AN ARCHITECTURAL FIRM HAS BEEN HIRED IN 2009 TO DESIGN A FAÇADE THAT WILL BE MORE IN CHARACTER WITH NEW DEVELOPMENT ON THE KINGSTON WATERFRONT.
 3. 3. SUPPORTED BY STATE AND LOCAL ELECTED OFFICIALS THE EXPANSION OF THE MUSEUM’S TROLLEY SYSTEM WILL BRING RENEWED GROWTH AND TOURISM TO THE MID-HUDSON REGION

DAILY FREEMAN - KINGSTON, NY PUBLISHED FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2009

KINGSTON — A battery-operated train made by a Japanese company could be tested on city-owned trolley tracks if U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer has his way. Schumer, D-N.Y., is calling on Kawasaki Rail Car Co. Chief Executive Officer Akira Hatton to choose Kingston as the American test site for the train. Schumer made his pitch in a phone call to Hatton last week, according to a press release from the senator’s office. “The city of Kingston is the perfect spot for Kawasaki to test a battery-powered light rail system,” Schumer said in the release. “Kingston’s location, resources and existing transit technology would allow Kawasaki to build quickly and with great success.”

The tracks along the Rondout Creek are owned by the city and leased to the Trolley Museum of New York in Downtown Kingston. During the warmer months, a tourist trolley that runs on fuel operates on the tracks.

 4. 4. THE TROLLEY MUSEUM, AS PART OF A PROGRAM IN BECOMING UNIVERSALLY ACCESSIBLE, HAS PAVED PATHWAYS TO AN EXPANDED AREA WHERE THE TROLLEY STOPS IN THE YARD IN ANTICIPATION OF THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A SHELTER/GUIDE HOUSE . THIS SHELTER DESIGN ACCOMMODATES WAITING RIDERS, PROVIDES MUSEUM INFORMATION AND HOUSES A WHEELCHAIR LIFT. ADDITIONALLY, A BROCHURE WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO EXPLAIN THE DESIGN CONCEPT AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE SHELTER. THIS DESIGN CONSISTS OF ALUMINUM FRAMING WHICH IS THEN CLAD IN WAVY STRIPS OF WHITE TRANSLUCENT CORIAN. THE CORIAN CLADDING IS IMPERVIOUS TO WEATHER AND DAMAGE FROM ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT. THE TRANSLUCENCY ALLOWS THE SHELTER TO GLOW IN SUNLIGHT AND ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS MAKING IT AN INVITING WAITING AREA FOR BOARDING PASSENGERS.
 5. 5. PLAN VIEW THE 8’X12’ SHELTER WILL ACCOMMODATE A WHEELCHAIR LIFT THAT WILL BE STORED OVERNIGHT. THE 12’ X 16’ STANDING SEAM ALUMINUM ROOF HAS A 2’ OVERHANG ON ALL SIDES. THE ALUMINUM BIKE STANCHIONS WILL SECURE 8-12 BICYLES.
 6. 6. ASSEMBLY THE TROLLEY SHELTER IS DESIGNED TO BE ASSEMBLED ON SITE (FULL SET OF CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS INCLUDED ON DISK AS A PDF FILE)

ALLOWS FOR MOVEMENT AND EASY ASSEMBLY ON AN ALTERNATIVE SITE WITHOUT USE OF HEAVY EQUIPMENT

ALLOWS A CREW OF VOLUNTEERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO ASSIST IN ASSEMBLY

ALLOWS FOR DISASSEMBLY AND STORAGE
