  • For example on Facebook, u see updates happening all the time Or a banking site where things change This is commonly seen on online banking sites where you can log in (by entering your user name and password) and check out your bank account balance. Your bank account information is stored in a database and connected to the web page with programming thus enabling you to see your banking information. I hope that it is understood by you that when you would like to start a database driven site; you would like to have it when your information changes very often, just like in a banking site.
  • Qn : Can you explain this
  • What is Server-side Scripting? Normally when a browser requests an HTML file, the server returns the file, but if the file contains a server-side script, the script inside the HTML file is executed by the server before the file is returned to the browser as plain HTML. Client –side The browser behaves in a certain way Example validation roll overs
  • Qn : please explain some of the above
  • Qn : a lot of cms’ have started using php

  • Help is easily available
  • Qn : is it really that simple
  • Separate each slide
  • Qn : is this true
  • Database driven sites can be built using several competing technologies, each with its own advantages. Some of those technologies/tools include PHP, JSP, ASP, PERL, NET, Coldfusion and more (these are server-side languages).

  • Server Side Programming Understanding PHP Functions and Usage Rohan Deshpande Associate Director – Technology at Hungama Kaushik Mhadeshwar Founder & Chief Catalyst at Learning Catalyst
  • How would life be different without server side programming?
  • For that, we need to know what dynamic and static sites are all about
  • Typical non-dynamic or static web pages do not change every time a page is loaded on a browser, not even when a user clicks on a button. The only change you see on a static page is when the pages loads and unloads , or you click on a hyper link .
  • Dynamic pages automatically change every time they are loaded, without you having to make any changes. They also change content based on what user does, like clicking on text or on an image.
  • Dynamic pages can result from server side programming or client side programming
  • Server-side scripting is about "programming" the behavior of the server. Client-side scripting is about "programming" the behavior of the browser.
  • PHP is the world’s largest open source server-side scripting language
  • Source : w3schools
    • Dynamically edit, change or add any content to a Web page
    • Respond to user queries or data submitted from HTML forms
    • Access any data or databases and return the results to a browser
    • Customize a Web page to make it more useful for individual users
    • Provide security since your server code cannot be viewed from a browser
What can PHP help you to do
  • Because the scripts are executed on the server, the browser that displays the ASP/PHP file does not need to support scripting at all.
  • Why has PHP become so popular ?
  • Its popularity stems from the fact that it's a very flexible and efficient tool. PHP can be used for applications as easy as colour and font control to handle accessibility issues , through to complex online ordering and tracking systems.     For programming Web 2.0 applications, PHP is the number one language.
    • PHP runs on different platforms like Linux, Windows, Unix.
    • PHP is compatible with almost all servers used today like Apache.
    • PHP is easy to learn and runs efficiently on the server side.
    • PHP provides many extensions for particular programming tasks
  • How does PHP work?
  •
  • If you can't figure it out, there's always help available
  • About 20 million sites use PHP2, among them some of the biggest names in the Web 2.0 sphere like Yahoo!, Flickr, Facebook, Friendster,Technorati, Zillow.com or Tagged.com .
  • Moodle, Drupal and WordPress all use PHP
  • PHP jobs are on the rise Source : WebWorkerdaily.com
  • Some sample applications that can be built using PHP… www.learningcatalyst.in
  • PHP-SQL can work in a wide canvas of applications
    • Any application that needs
    • A database for storage of user data and
    • A browser as the primary user interface
    • There’s a good chance the PHP-MySQL
    • combination will work for you.
  • Wait a minute, isn’t this also open source?
  • Open source is mainstream today
    • Google has two open source operating systems: Android and Chrome OS.
    • Apache remains hugely popular among web servers.
    •
    • Red Hat is a successful public company posting strong financial results with its business model of services and support for open-source software.
    • Firefox is taking away market share from Internet Explorer every month.
    • The list goes on…
  • Some cool things you can do using PHP
      • Build a search engine that responds to user queries
      • Record user input provided through web forms and save it for future reference
      • Create web sites that dynamically update themselves with new content
      • Manage a blog (or more than one)
      • Process electronic payments and track customer orders
      • Build customized bar graphs, pie charts, and other statistical reports from raw numeric data
      • Carry out online surveys and polls, and create reports of the results
  • When you have to write a code that's hard to maintain, make it easier using PHP A code needs to be secure and reliable, but it also needs to be easy to enhance, which is the challenge.
  • When you learn PHO, it’s also a good idea to learn SQL That way, you can leverage the immense number of freely available PHP/MySQL applications to reduce development and deployment time
