A client asked me to help them monetize their online magazine. The client had time, but they didn't have any internet marketing experience and weren't sure where to start. I demystified the experience for them by devising 10 easy steps for their organization to do their own marketing. These simple steps include using free tools such as Google Analytics and Google search to research both their competitors and their potential customers.

  • 1. Monetize Your Website in 10 Easy Steps Stop being intimidated and start making money. http://slidesha.re/SSoUA6
  • 2. When a client approached me asking if I could help monetize their site – I first investigated whether or not there was apotential audience for what they were doing. I didn’t want to waste anyone’s time.
  • 3. I looked at free online data about the people in the regions they were trying to reach. I asked questions like: Is the population growing? Does the population have disposableincome? What sort of activities do they do with this income?
  • 4. While researching potential audience demographics, I cameacross competitor marketing materials. Your competitors are agreat resource for information when you are just starting out inbusiness. Google them, check out their website, emailmarketing, PPC, and social media.
  • 5. What follows are 10 easy steps to monetize yourwebsite. These optimization tips will work for any sortof site. My focus here will be on blogs or magazines.
  • 6. STEP 1: Get a Google Analytics account and put the GoogleAnalytics code on your website. This will give you the statistics you need to tell potential advertisers more about your users. It’s also a great way to find out what content on your site is most popular, so you can create more of it.
  • 7. STEP 2: Get rid of those free ads for your friends. If those hints asking them to pay for the ads haven’t worked, it’s time to get someone who will pay. Sign up for Google AdSense, and strangers will pay you. It will look kind of like this, below. I often search about “social media” so this is the ad I got: aconference called Social Media Marketing World in San Diego.
  • 8. STEP 3: Update your site and make these updates sharable, frequent and as relevant as possible. Think about what your readers like, use your GA keyword searches then make ithappen…An online survey? An events calendar? And makesure you have a way to get in touch with readers – an email sign up plus social media accounts set up for Google Plus, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn.
  • 9. STEP 4: If you’ve looked at your competitors, you probably saw that they have this mysterious thing called a media kit. You need one too. Keep it short, tell your prospectiveadvertisers why your site visitors will make them money. Use your GA stats; send a survey to your site visitors (offering a nice prize for their time) to find out more about them.
  • 10. STEP 5: Now that you’re getting all this incredible traffic toyour site and info on your users, it’s time to think about directly approaching advertisers. Brainstorm what businesses might be interested in advertising or forming partnerships.Partnerships can be anything from promoting your site at their events, to getting your site mentioned on their sites.
  • 11. STEP 6: Create a PR campaign. Write a press release about your site and the people contributing to it. The easiest way todo this is to find press releases online, or simply see how yourtargeted blog or print writers write. There is something unique and interesting about you and your content, make it heard.Still not sure how to do this? Keep Googling, it’s all out there!
  • 12. STEP 7: One thing that even the largest companies tend to isforget that the best content is not necessarily product-centric, but is content that is of interest to the site visitor. With this in mind it’s time to start thinking about using outside content;whether it’s a “blogroll” or getting guest writers, this is a great way to generate both goodwill and more traffic to your site.
  • 13. STEP 8: This step involves taking a long, hard look at whatmarketing has worked and what hasn’t. If it hasn’t worked, askwhy? If it has worked, continue to do more of it. Has the workgotten too time consuming for your team? Consider an intern.
  • 14. STEP 9: Now that you have the basics down there are some opportunities to create traffic and revenue from new ways. You might consider a premium membership with specialaccess to partner deals; or develop a special content offering for specific advertiser need. Advertising supplements orguides, whether print or digital, are great revenue generators.
  • 15. STEP 10: Digital marketing occasionally benefits from real “inperson” marketing. A booth at a conference, or even better, a speaking engagement at one – is a great way to spread theword and network about your business. Follow your audience to where such events might be applicable for your site.
  • 16. AND FINALLY: When you have achieved some of thesuccesses you planned on think about giving something for free (now that you can actually get money for it). Offeradvertising or be a sponsor for your favorite charity (ask for your logo etc., on their site and other collateral in return).
