Advantages of MBR compared to conventional Activated Sludge (AS) process:
Lower footprint (up to 50% reduction)
Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), a measure of the incoming organic content, can be increased to 8,000 – 15000 mg/L. compared to 2,000 – 3,000 mg/L for a conventional system
This can reduce the hydraulic retention time (HRT) significantly

The elevated biomass concentration allows for very effective removal of both soluble and particulate biodegradable materials at higher loading rate
Thus, increased Sludge Retention Times (SRTs), usually exceeding 15 days, ensure complete nitrification, an important consideration in Food & Beverage plants
