  1. 1. “$MART” Grant Supplemental Media and Resource Technology Grant The Satilla REMC Foundation establishes the $MART Grant Program to assist media specialists and their smart students at schools within Satilla REMC’s service area. Sponsors: The Satilla REMC Foundation and Satilla REMC sponsor the $mart Grant Program. The Foundation administers the Smart Change Program in which the Cooperative’s Members volunteer to “round up” their power bills to the nearest whole dollar. The change goes directly to the Satilla REMC Foundation, a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing educational opportunities for students in Satilla’s service area. Satilla REMC is a not-for-profit, consumer-owned power cooperative providing electricity to more than 52,000 accounts in Appling, Atkinson, Bacon, Coffee, Jeff Davis, Pierce, Ware and Wayne counties. Questions: Call Sue Johnson, Public Relations Coordinator, at 912-632-3423 or @ sjohnson@satillaemc.com.
  2. 2. “$MART” Grant Supplemental Media and Resource Technology Grant Purpose: Media Centers lack the funds necessary to carry out the mission(s) that is assigned to them. Individual Media Centers may submit only one application during the funding year. Grant Limits: Maximum funding for acceptable applicants is $1325. Partial funding requests are acceptable. (20%) • Project is clearly defined with goals to be accomplished. (15%) • Project enhances current instructional experiences. (15%) • Project provides both immediate and multi-year benefits to the school and its students. (20%) • Application provides a detailed budget summary. (10%) Audit: After acceptable applications are determined, Satilla REMC Foundation will communicate with each media center to work out a “paper trail” for audit purposes. It is the intention that the program(s) and/or equipment purchased with the $MART Grant funds be verified easily. After a specified period of no longer than 12 months in which the grantee agrees to expend the funds, the Satilla REMC Foundation will perform an audit to verify the results and will have the discretion to review the use of the funds beyond the initial audit. 5. 5. $MART 2010 Grant Application Grant Number__________ About The Project (Please include the name of the school, the name of the Media Specialist and the county in which the school is served) Project Name___Revolutionized Approach to Reading _____________________ Primary Curriculum areas affected (If more than one, list.)__English Language Arts__ Amount Requested_$1325.00___Number of Students to benefit from project_989____ Will the item(s) purchased be used for more than one school year?__Yes_________ Project Overview Project summary – give an overview of the project. (50 words) The grant funds will be used to purchase Kindle’s. The Kindle’s will be used in the classrooms for reading. Since the funds will only purchase 8, they will have to be checked out from the library. This would be a trial basis. If they were successful, then more would be purchased at a later date. Students will be allowed to check out the kindle’s and then return them before then check-in date. The students will use the kindle’s to read books or articles that may or may not be available in the library. Value of project – Explain how the project adds value to the educational process. (100 words) The kindle is just like reading a book, it is just that the book is on a screen and there are more options than just turning a page. The kindle will add value to the educational process by ensuring that students with disabilities have the same opportunity as their peers. It will also help students coming from the different learning style backgrounds. These devices would ensure that every student was engaged in the learning process by providing them with different options for reading class material. It would allow that student that never takes notes to use the device to take notes and then back them up on Amazon so they can be accessed from anywhere! 6. 6. $MART 2010 Grant Application Grant Number__________ Recipients - What portion of the student population will be affected by the project? In what ways will the project affect the student body? (100 words) The entire student body would be affected by this project. They might not all be able to use the kindle at once, but every student would have a chance to check it out at some point. The students would also be able to use them to work on reading projects in the classroom in groups. The students would also have access to materials that the media center might not have available or may not have at all. The project would make it possible for students with disabilities to have the same opportunities as the other students in their class. Goals – What are the goals and objectives for the students? What do you plan to achieve with the project? (100 words) The main goal would be to get students interested in reading. This is a major problem with the student population in today’s society. They are not interested in searching the library for a book, only to find it is as thick as a hamburger (per one of my students). If students had a kindle available to them, it might spark an interest to look up a title of a book and read it. I also plan to incorporate a reading program where the whole school will work together to read a certain amount of books. The students that are not interested in reading would be more apt to read a book if they could use a piece of technology while reading! Sponsored by the Satilla REMC Foundation Page 6 of 9
  7. 7. $MART 2010 Grant Application Grant Number__________ Instructional Experiences - How will current instructional experiences by enhanced by the project? (100 words) The kindle will spark an interest in that student who thinks books are boring. The kindle would allow them to choose from over 1500 books that can be programmed into this piece of technology. A reading class would be really enhanced with the use of kindle’s in the classrooms. The teachers could use them for group reading assignments. The students would be excited about reading the current selection in their reading class. Another good thing is that the font can be changed for those who have vision problems. This would enable them to read their favorite titles just like their friends. Benefits – What is the immediate and/or ongoing benefit this will provide students? (100 words) The first and most important benefit is that it will be new to most students and get them curious about reading books. They will want to try it out and find that they like reading when they have different options available to them. The font can be changed for those students with vision problems so this will be an accommodation for them. Students that lack in reading fluency could use them because the larger text would allow them to read faster. It would benefit all learning styles. The screen is reflective like the page in a book, so it would not be the same as starring at a computer screen for hours. Sponsored by the Satilla REMC Foundation Page 7 of 9
