7. The Pixy Stick Sandwich
● The “Basket Case”, Allison Reynolds,
in the lunch scene eats her own
creation of a sandwich for lunch.
● The sandwich contains 4 Pixy Sticks, 1
slice of wheat bread, 1 slice of white
bread, what appears to be white
American cheese, and to top it off
Cap’n Crunch cereal.
● She also consumes a can of Coca-a-
Cola

8. Interpretation/Recommendations
After analyzing the pixy stick sandwich lunch that Allison consumes during the lunch break scene,
it can be seen that this meal would not be a proper diet to consume each day. There is way too
much sodium and sugar within the meal and it is higher than the recommended amounts that a
person of her age needs.
Furthermore, this meal portrayed in this 1980’s film lacks the fortified foods that can be found in
today’s food. Cereals and breads didn’t become fortified until the 1990’s. This means that the meal
she consumed lacks many of the vitamins and minerals that are incorporated into cereals and
breads that are sold today.
Lastly, her meal did not have any fruits or vegetables in it and she threw out the only sort of meat
product that was on the sandwich, bologna, onto the statue in the library, so she didn’t receive any
protein within her diet as well.
9. Recommendations to our Character
We would establish a rapport and
encourage her to make one change
at a time.
1.Reduce sugar by drinking Diet
Coke, or water.
2.Great to get rid of high sodium is
processed lunch meat.
3.Use artificial sweeteners
4.Replace cheese with avocado
5.Increase amount of fruits and
vegetables
6.Switch to a whole wheat bread
10. Based on Allison’s estimated age, height, and weight we recommend:
Middle Adolescence
●Protein, 0.85 g/kg body weight
○ Protein deficiency reduces linear growth, delays in sexual maturation, reduced LBM
●Calcium, 1300 mg/d
○ Calcium fortified foods
●Increased Iron Needs
○ deficiency leads to fatigue, delayed or impaired growth and development
●Increase Vitamin D, Folate
If she continues to eat this way, she could face a myriad of chronic health problems such as
hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or body image disturbances.
