WriteTell me about a time when you struggled to fit in. Why did you struggle? What did you do?
New communities?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBAYiBoy43M Many times, we struggle to “fit in” when we are attempting to join new discourse communities (Swales). We need to adjust to the ways that members of discourse communities talk to each other.
Discourse communitiesRemember this from ENC 1101?Swales’ definition of discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals has mechanisms of intercommunication among its members uses its participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback utilizes and hence possesses one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims has its own specific lexis (terminology, jargon) has a threshold level of membership (not anybody can participate)
Basically… Looking at how community members talk to each other may allow you to communicate (or “fit in”) more effectively. These methods of communication can be understood as Genres
Write…What communities are you involved in? do people write inthese communities? What do these genres say about thegroup? This can go in your reading/research journal. This can beelectronic or in a physical notebook. I will collect thisperiodically throughout the semester.
Homework Start reading Bawarshi and Reiff: http://thelemming.com/lemming/POP- CULTURE/Materiality%20and%20Genre.pdf Take notes in your reading/research journal. I will be reading these. Define any words you don’t understand. Then, write at least 2 paragraphs summarizing what you think the article was about. Think about the relationship between discourse communities and genres.
