    Task 3 ---- Task 3 ---- Presentation Transcript

    • How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts Task 2 – Advanced Portfolio
    • Star Image
      • Star Image is the personal image that a band wants to reach out to their target audience.
      • Star Image is based upon the band’s appearance, style and behaviour and how this is portrayed to their audiences.
    • Institutional Context - Label
      • Influence on our band’s label, style and star image.
      • We chose ‘Transgressive records’ to be the record label for our band ‘The Coo Coo Club’, as the star image is relative to other bands signed to ‘transgressive records’ record label – meaning similar audiences.
      • Transgressive Records – The subways, mystery jets, the young knives, larrikin love, foals, the rumble strips, johnny flynn. An independent record label based in London, artists signed to Transgressive tend to be of a more alternative, independent, different style and sound, such bands as foals who are in the indie scene in London.
    •
    • The Coo Coo Club
      • Star Image - The Star Image of our band will have an organic ideology, as they are a new and upcoming band, they appear very normal and organic towards the target audience. The band will have a very youthful and unique and different style, with a geeky and alternative quirky look. The sound will be very 'mouth rock style' with positive, upbeat and happy themes and lyrics to the songs.
      • Target Audience - Students 16+ split evenly between male and female, this is attractive to females as it is an all boy band, yet also attractive to males as they could be seen as idol type figures.
      • Similar real artists of a similar type - Passion Pit Mystery Jets Bombay Bicycle Club Foals Vampire Weekend
    • Organic Ideology
      • A naturalistic approach to the band’s image.
      • An ‘organic ideology’ means that the band’s original image is just enhanced to the public/not changed.
      • The band focuses on their music and nothing else.
    • A Poster for the release of ‘The Coo Coo Club’s’ Single
      • This is quite a simple design layout, representing the band, the bands performance, and the girls riding the bicycles. This photograph fits the theme of the first single, and the single’s music video.
      • This image and layout represents the organic, environmentally friendly look, as the lighting looks natural/un-artificial and atmospheric.
    • The Album cover for ‘The Coo Coo Club’ - Our album cover fits the theme/atmospheric look we have for our poster and throughout our music video. - This photograph particularly emphasises the bicycle, the band and the atmospheric lanterns. - This photograph particularly emphasises the organic themes/bicycles/youthfulness and appearance of the band.
    • A still from our Music Video This still represents the bands youthfulness and energy. This still is from the ‘carnival’/’festival’ scene in our music video. This particularly emphasises the star image of the band we wanted to portray as the carnival/festival style fits the organic, natural star image and style of ‘The Coo Coo Club’, creative, environmentally friendly, youthful and original.
    • Richard Dyer
      • Dyer believes stars have key features in common, These being…
      • A star is an image, not a real person that is constructed out of a range of materials e.g advertising.
      • Stars are commodities produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings.
      • Stars depend on such media as magazines, tv and radio in order to construct an image for themselves which can be marketed to their target audiences.
      • The term star refers to the semi-mythological set of meanings constructed around music performers in order to sell the performer to a large and loyal audience. Star image is particularly how the bands appearance is presented to their target demographic. To keep the audience interested the band aims to make the audience try to ‘continue’ or ‘make sense of’ their image furthermore.
    • Keith Negus
      • Negus is a famous media academic who believes record companies work with two main ideologies within the promotion of artists.
      • These being;
      • ‘ Organic’ – where the record label has ‘nurtured’ the band.
      • ‘ Synthetic’ – the record label has ‘constructed’ the band.
    • The Link between the ancillary text and the final product
      • The link between the ancillary text and the final product is clear, in the way they all portray and represent similar themes by their use of colour and effect.
      • Our ancillary texts are very effective as it is clear that they are for the same product as the music video for ‘The Coo Coo Club’s’ first single. The Music video sets off a very organic, natural atmosphere by the use of colour, style and behaviour and this is continued in the style, colour and effectiveness of the ancillary texts, particularly in our image selection which tends to mainly focus on the ‘bicycle’ , ‘environmentally friendly’ and ‘organic’ themes.
