MESSAGE FROM
MANAGEMENT
Welcome
How quickly semester one ends
and another semester is upon us!

The residential environment has been a hive of activity for
the past month with our students returning to residence,
participating in return activities and a number of exciting
social, cultural and sporting events ahead in the calendar.
Highlights of semester one included the ongoing Bundoora
inter-residence sporting competition (which Menzies is
currently leading), our International Welcome Program,
Careers Week, offsite excursions, Open Day, mid-year student
leadership training, 2016 student leadership selection activities,
the various fundraising events held across both campuses and
the enriching activities and events held as part of our wellness
programs on the floors and across the wider University.
It’s been a very busy time within Accommodation Services,
with a large number of the team heavily involved in student
leadership selection with well over 300 applications for around
70 roles. We look forward to formally announcing our successful
appointments to all student leadership roles In the next edition
of the Residential Review.
We also wish to acknowledge the academic successes of all
of our residents from the first semester as is highlighted in our
Residential Academic Coordinator reports. It was fantastic to see
so many students perform so well, and we are all appreciative of
the sacrifices you each have made to work as hard as you each
have throughout the year. We wish you all the best of luck as
you continue with your studies for the rest of the year.
We encourage all students to make the most of the
opportunities available during the remainder of the year,
whether it be getting involved in sporting and social programs,
health and wellbeing activities or other programs being held
across the wider university.
If you are keen to know more about ways you can get
involved or what activities are forthcoming, please feel free
to contact the Accommodation Services office, download
the Accommodation Services App (latrobe.edu.au/

where you will find all the latest news and updates.
We hope all residents had the opportunity to complete the
recent Accommodation Services Annual Student Experience
Survey. Results will be made available to all students in the next
edition. It has great to see our lucky prize winners walk away
with gift cards and fruit or meat platers – with plenty more
prizes set to be drawn!
Finally, our congratulations go to those students who will
be jet-setting off to South Africa, Cambodia, Barcelona
and Nepal at the end of the year as part of our CISaustralia

Semester two started off with a bang with the International
Welcome Program, running from 21 – 23 July with
approximately 170 new international students joining
us for the second half of the year.
As part of the Welcome Program, our new internationals
thoroughly enjoyed three days of activities which include
a shopping excursion, various dinners and an Australian
Reptile Show. Congratulations to our Welcome Program

“Leaving family and friends to move halfway
across the world was a scary thought, but the
welcome activities have allowed me to feel
comfortable on campus and meet new people.
On Tuesday we had some free time to visit the
nature reserve and we saw our first kangaroo.
Tuesday night also featured a guided walk to
Polaris and free pizza. Wednesday’s reptile
show was amazing... Seeing and holding snakes
and lizards and crocodiles was super cool. I’ve
really been able to integrate into the campus
and feel comfortable in my new home”

CAREERS WEEK
With graduate employability at the lowest that it has been
in 20 years, Accommodation Services wanted to play a key
role in ensuring our residents, future graduates, had the best
chance at entering the workforce with a head start – and so,
emerged Careers Week!
Taking place from Monday to Wednesday in early August, the
week featured an introductory careers session with the Career
Development Centre, focusing on cover letters, resume writing
and interview tips and tricks, an industry panel QA with six
amazing panellists sharing their knowledge about the workforce
and finally, a practical mock interview evening, providing those
involved with the chance to test their new skills. Check out the
great photos from the Tuesday night Industry Panel!
Overall, the week was a great success, with those in
attendance finding real value in the workshops, activities,
presentations and panel QA. Our thanks for to our Careers
Team members – Anna Luciani, Denise Egan and Helena Martin,
the Accommodation Services’ staff involved – Laura Burge,
Laura Freeman, Brendan McCarthy, and Nicole Deller, and our
distinguished industry panellists:
§§ Rebecca Palmer: Practitioners Services Australia,
General Manager
§§ Jane Nyssen: Value Marketing, Resources Manager
§§ Lauren Brewerton: La Trobe University, Senior Human
Resources Business Partner
§§ Rita Manessis: La Trobe University, Jobs on Campus Coordinator
§§ Professor Leigh Drake: La Trobe University,
Pro-Vice Chancellor Post-Graduate Coursework
§§ Tony McGillion: Austin Health, Clinical Nursing Education
Accommodation Services looks forward to running this program
again in 2016, making it available to more residents to assist
them in their skill development and future career aspirations.

HEALTH AND
WELLBEING NEWS
The home stretch is officially upon us… could we get some
nicer weather to match?!
We wrapped a successful first semester with an awesome Fuel
Juice and Soup Bar giveaway – were you one of our 400 lucky
gift certificate recipients? If not, stay tuned for your second
chance at the end of semester two.
After a nice relaxing break, we bounced right back into action
with a residence-wide trip to Latitude Bounce-Climb-Fly on July
28! Over 400 residents turned out, and a great time was had
by all. See the next page for some action shots...
Our second cooking class of the year was a roaring success,
with residents cooking up a feast of quinoa and black bean
burgers, with a lovely kale/almond/quinoa/feta salad. Great
food and great conversation!
Students also had a chance to bust a move at Zumba during
week two. We hope to see great attendance rates at our
upcoming self-defence, laughter yoga, Pilates, and yoga events.
We’ve got some exciting new initiatives kicking off
in semester two which you won’t want to miss.
On September 9, we’ll be working with Counselling Services to
celebrate R U OK? Day. Stay tuned for more info about where
and when this important event will take place.
On 23 September from 4.30 pm – 7.30 pm, we’ll be hosting
Everything is Awesome in the Menzies Courtyard. This
celebratory event is open to all Bundoora-based residents, so
come along for awesome food (served from a variety of local
food trucks) and live entertainment!
On October 7, get ready to laugh, as our health promotions
students present a comedy night! More info to come – be sure
to read our weekly bulletin (and The Dunny Despatch) to find
out when and how to reserve your (free) tickets.
And finally, join us at Eagle Bar on October 22 as we join
White Ribbon Australia in pledging to help stop violence
against women. More info to come!

COMMUNITY CHALLENGE NEWS
The Community Standards portfolio is always looking for new
ways to engage residents in events that help foster team work
and resilience.
This year we began semester one with the “Community
Challenge” event. The event involved cryptic clues posted via
the Accommodation Services Facebook page to the location
of an unnamed object hidden someone within the grounds of
La Trobe University.
Being the first event of its kind we were hopeful that we would
get a strong participation rate and we were not let down when
80 residents in teams of four registered to take part! Over the
course of several weeks we took great pleasure in watching
scores of teams running all over campus looking for the mystery
item. The Community Challenge led teams to many areas on
campus that they had not previously attended and our teams
ultimately found the hidden object (an AFL football) located
under a weeping cherry in the garden behind David Myers
building adjacent to the sculpture of Sofia.
The clue that finally led to the location of the football was:
“It’s Sofia, but not from modern family.” This sculpture
by Hermann Hohaus was a gift to the University in 1987.
The game continued with a new location which was ultimately
discovered down by the Moat. Our residents are very familiar
with the moat so we were surprised how long it took to locate
the football in this location! Our winning team enjoyed the
spoils of their victory with each team member taking home a
hamper filled with food and treats!
Coming Soon: The Community Challenge is now back for
semester two but the clues will be even tougher and the
location harder to find! Have you registered?

FAMILY FEUD
The Social Team hosted their first event for semester
two, Family Feud, on Wednesday 12 August in the McKay
Lecture Theatre.
12 teams competed in a fast-paced preliminary round,
answering questions such as ‘name a sport that doesn’t use
a ball’ or ‘name something that originates from Japan’. Hosts
Brodie Biggs (Villas) and Pat Blood (Units) kept the audience
laughing with their witty commentary. At the end of 12 rounds,
The Fighting Mongooses came out victorious, winning a swag
of Coles Myer vouchers.
Special thanks to Kaity Challis (Hillside) who deciphered the
rules of the Family Feud board game and came up with our
schedule and running sheet for the evening.
QUEEN VICTORIA NIGHT MARKET
EXCURSION
On Wednesday 5 August 45 students jumped on a VLine
and braved the chilly Melbourne conditions to check out
the Queen Victoria Night Market.
For some students it was their first time visiting one of
Melbourne’s icons. Students enjoyed the variety of food on
offer; smoky BBQ meats, pizza, ramen noodles, Mexican and
bread bowls filled with steaming hot soup. Music was provided
by the very talented Holy Moses Heartache and quite a few
students spent their hard earned money on market delights.
The event was so popular that some students are counting
down to the Night Markets reopening for the summer!
MACPHERSON SMITH RURAL FOUNDATION
LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
Accommodation Services were approached by the Macpherson
Smith Rural Foundation to see if any regional or rural Victorian
students who showed excellent leadership skills would be
interested in attending a 7 day leadership program, aiming to
grow and foster leadership skills in young, rural Victorians.
At the recommendation of their student leaders, Jake
Mackinnon (Hillside) and Mikayla McAuliffe (Terraces) attended
the program. Both Jake and Mikayla have shared their
experiences, see the photo montage on the following page.

SPELLING BEE
On Tuesday 11 August the Spelling Bee was facilities by our
Academic Mentor Team with all first years attending in the
McKay Lecture theatre.
There was a range of countries represented in the costume
department, with best dressed going to Dayna from HA6
and around 20 people confident enough to test their spelling
abilities and face the packed lecture theatre. It was good to
see second years taking on the first years as well. One of the
highlights of the night was a law student attempting to spell
choir starting with “qu”! Words were comprised of 4-14 letter
words with the winning word being one of the larger ones.
First place went to Meghana Magatala, Second to Tess Coates
and third to Jeffrey Ding. Overall the event was very successful,
with everyone enjoying themselves with the mix of comedy
from the background slides and some horrible spelling!
Congratulations to the Mentor Team for a well organised,
planned and hosted event.

OVER RECENT
MONTHS...
McFarlane’s Hill Residence and East End Residence health,
wellbeing, social and community events have included:
Residential Formal Evening was held at the Valleys Restaurant
(Wodonga TAFE Facility) and was a huge success. 50 residents
‘glammed up’ in their formal wear and enjoyed a night of
reflection and fine food.
Christmas in July Celebration: A small number of residents
enjoyed a Christmas Dinner together in Unit 12. It was nice to
get the Res Family together mid-year for traditional festive food
and good company.
Alcocups Visit: A drug and alcohol information session was
organised with presenter Ashley Gurney from Alcocups.
This was a very relevant and timely activity, held prior to the
Deviant’s Ball – Albury-Wodonga’s Campus annual event.
School Group Visits: We have had plenty of school groups
visiting the residences during campus tours, gaining insight into
university life. This has been good development for leaders in
promoting the campus and the university.
The residences are now getting ready for spring, with Open
Day, Accommodation Tours, new residents, and more and more
birthday gatherings, sporting events, and fun ahead.
Thank you to our Residential Student Leadership Team;
Tayla (Senior RA) and the team of RA’s continue their good
work in supporting each other and all the residents.

The residential environment has been a hive of activity for the past month with our students returning to residence, participating in return activities and a number of exciting social, cultural and sporting events ahead in the calendar. Highlights of semester one included the ongoing Bundoora inter-residence sporting competition (which Menzies is currently leading), our International Welcome Program, Careers Week, offsite excursions, Open Day, mid-year student leadership training, 2016 student leadership selection activities, the various fundraising events held across both campuses and the enriching activities and events held as part of our wellness programs on the floors and across the wider University. It’s been a very busy time within Accommodation Services, with a large number of the team heavily involved in student leadership selection with well over 300 applications for around 70 roles. We look forward to formally announcing our successful appointments to all student leadership roles In the next edition of the Residential Review. We also wish to acknowledge the academic successes of all of our residents from the first semester as is highlighted in our Residential Academic Coordinator reports. It was fantastic to see so many students perform so well, and we are all appreciative of the sacrifices you each have made to work as hard as you each have throughout the year. We wish you all the best of luck as you continue with your studies for the rest of the year. We encourage all students to make the most of the opportunities available during the remainder of the year, whether it be getting involved in sporting and social programs, health and wellbeing activities or other programs being held across the wider university. If you are keen to know more about ways you can get involved or what activities are forthcoming, please feel free to contact the Accommodation Services office, download the Accommodation Services App (latrobe.edu.au/ accommodation/locations/residential-life/guidebook) or jump on the Accommodation Services Facebook Pages (Bendigo: facebook.com/pages/Accommodation-Services-La-Trobe- University-Bendigo and Bundoora: facebook.com/pages/ Accommodation-Services-La-Trobe-University-Bundoora) where you will find all the latest news and updates. We hope all residents had the opportunity to complete the recent Accommodation Services Annual Student Experience Survey. Results will be made available to all students in the next edition. It has great to see our lucky prize winners walk away with gift cards and fruit or meat platers – with plenty more prizes set to be drawn! Finally, our congratulations go to those students who will be jet-setting off to South Africa, Cambodia, Barcelona and Nepal at the end of the year as part of our CISaustralia Global Programs! Taking place from Monday to Wednesday in early August, the week featured an introductory careers session with the Career Development Centre, focusing on cover letters, resume writing and interview tips and tricks, an industry panel QA with six amazing panellists sharing their knowledge about the workforce and finally, a practical mock interview evening, providing those involved with the chance to test their new skills. Check out the great photos from the Tuesday night Industry Panel! Overall, the week was a great success, with those in attendance finding real value in the workshops, activities, presentations and panel QA. • 7. Jump to contents 7The Residential Review · Third Quarter 2015 BUNDOORA CAMPUS NEWS HEALTH AND WELLBEING NEWS The home stretch is officially upon us… could we get some nicer weather to match?! We wrapped a successful first semester with an awesome Fuel Juice and Soup Bar giveaway – were you one of our 400 lucky gift certificate recipients? If not, stay tuned for your second chance at the end of semester two. After a nice relaxing break, we bounced right back into action with a residence-wide trip to Latitude Bounce-Climb-Fly on July 28! Over 400 residents turned out, and a great time was had by all. See the next page for some action shots... Our second cooking class of the year was a roaring success, with residents cooking up a feast of quinoa and black bean burgers, with a lovely kale/almond/quinoa/feta salad. Great food and great conversation! Students also had a chance to bust a move at Zumba during week two. We hope to see great attendance rates at our upcoming self-defence, laughter yoga, Pilates, and yoga events. We’ve got some exciting new initiatives kicking off in semester two which you won’t want to miss. On September 9, we’ll be working with Counselling Services to celebrate R U OK? Day. Stay tuned for more info about where and when this important event will take place. On 23 September from 4.30 pm – 7.30 pm, we’ll be hosting Everything is Awesome in the Menzies Courtyard. This celebratory event is open to all Bundoora-based residents, so come along for awesome food (served from a variety of local food trucks) and live entertainment! On October 7, get ready to laugh, as our health promotions students present a comedy night! More info to come – be sure to read our weekly bulletin (and The Dunny Despatch) to find out when and how to reserve your (free) tickets. And finally, join us at Eagle Bar on October 22 as we join White Ribbon Australia in pledging to help stop violence against women. More info to come! Ali Norton Residential Education Coordinator: Health and Wellbeing COMMUNITY CHALLENGE NEWS The Community Standards portfolio is always looking for new ways to engage residents in events that help foster team work and resilience. This year we began semester one with the “Community Challenge” event. The event involved cryptic clues posted via the Accommodation Services Facebook page to the location of an unnamed object hidden someone within the grounds of La Trobe University. Being the first event of its kind we were hopeful that we would get a strong participation rate and we were not let down when 80 residents in teams of four registered to take part! Over the course of several weeks we took great pleasure in watching scores of teams running all over campus looking for the mystery item. The Community Challenge led teams to many areas on campus that they had not previously attended and our teams ultimately found the hidden object (an AFL football) located under a weeping cherry in the garden behind David Myers building adjacent to the sculpture of Sofia. The clue that finally led to the location of the football was: “It’s Sofia, but not from modern family.” This sculpture by Hermann Hohaus was a gift to the University in 1987. The game continued with a new location which was ultimately discovered down by the Moat. Our residents are very familiar with the moat so we were surprised how long it took to locate the football in this location! Our winning team enjoyed the spoils of their victory with each team member taking home a hamper filled with food and treats! Coming Soon: The Community Challenge is now back for semester two but the clues will be even tougher and the location harder to find! Have you registered? • 9. Jump to contents 9The Residential Review · Third Quarter 2015 BENDIGO CAMPUS NEWS FAMILY FEUD The Social Team hosted their first event for semester two, Family Feud, on Wednesday 12 August in the McKay Lecture Theatre. 12 teams competed in a fast-paced preliminary round, answering questions such as ‘name a sport that doesn’t use a ball’ or ‘name something that originates from Japan’. Hosts Brodie Biggs (Villas) and Pat Blood (Units) kept the audience laughing with their witty commentary. At the end of 12 rounds, The Fighting Mongooses came out victorious, winning a swag of Coles Myer vouchers. Special thanks to Kaity Challis (Hillside) who deciphered the rules of the Family Feud board game and came up with our schedule and running sheet for the evening. QUEEN VICTORIA NIGHT MARKET EXCURSION On Wednesday 5 August 45 students jumped on a VLine and braved the chilly Melbourne conditions to check out the Queen Victoria Night Market. For some students it was their first time visiting one of Melbourne’s icons. Students enjoyed the variety of food on offer; smoky BBQ meats, pizza, ramen noodles, Mexican and bread bowls filled with steaming hot soup. Music was provided by the very talented Holy Moses Heartache and quite a few students spent their hard earned money on market delights. The event was so popular that some students are counting down to the Night Markets reopening for the summer! MACPHERSON SMITH RURAL FOUNDATION LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Accommodation Services were approached by the Macpherson Smith Rural Foundation to see if any regional or rural Victorian students who showed excellent leadership skills would be interested in attending a 7 day leadership program, aiming to grow and foster leadership skills in young, rural Victorians. At the recommendation of their student leaders, Jake Mackinnon (Hillside) and Mikayla McAuliffe (Terraces) attended the program. Both Jake and Mikayla have shared their experiences, see the photo montage on the following page. There was a range of countries represented in the costume department, with best dressed going to Dayna from HA6 and around 20 people confident enough to test their spelling abilities and face the packed lecture theatre. It was good to see second years taking on the first years as well. One of the highlights of the night was a law student attempting to spell choir starting with “qu”! Words were comprised of 4-14 letter words with the winning word being one of the larger ones. First place went to Meghana Magatala, Second to Tess Coates and third to Jeffrey Ding. Overall the event was very successful, with everyone enjoying themselves with the mix of comedy from the background slides and some horrible spelling! Congratulations to the Mentor Team for a well organised, planned and hosted event. McFarlane’s Hill Residence and East End Residence health, wellbeing, social and community events have included: Residential Formal Evening was held at the Valleys Restaurant (Wodonga TAFE Facility) and was a huge success. 50 residents ‘glammed up’ in their formal wear and enjoyed a night of reflection and fine food. Christmas in July Celebration: A small number of residents enjoyed a Christmas Dinner together in Unit 12. It was nice to get the Res Family together mid-year for traditional festive food and good company. Alcocups Visit: A drug and alcohol information session was organised with presenter Ashley Gurney from Alcocups. This was a very relevant and timely activity, held prior to the Deviant’s Ball – Albury-Wodonga’s Campus annual event. School Group Visits: We have had plenty of school groups visiting the residences during campus tours, gaining insight into university life. This has been good development for leaders in promoting the campus and the university. The residences are now getting ready for spring, with Open Day, Accommodation Tours, new residents, and more and more birthday gatherings, sporting events, and fun ahead. Thank you to our Residential Student Leadership Team; Tayla (Senior RA) and the team of RA’s continue their good work in supporting each other and all the residents. Melissa McFarlane (Accommodation Services Officer, La Trobe University) Rosie Miller (East End Residential Coordinator) WHAT’S COMING UP? §§ Diversity Day 2 September: Free food and activities, games and prizes to be won §§ Melbourne Cup Racing Lunch: Resident dinner and games night – November §§ Looking forward to Spring Time! ALBURY-WODONGA CAMPUS NEWS WHAT’S NEW? Construction of the new outdoor living area (tables, chairs, shade sails, BBQ) will commence in September, just in time for Spring BBQ time. This will be a valuable addition to ‘McFarlane’s Hill Residence’, shared by Full-time and placement residents.  AlcoCups activity
