  2. 3. Answering the Call for Reform <ul><li>The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards® is rooted in the belief that the single most important action this country can take to improve schools and student learning is to strengthen teaching. </li></ul>

History <ul><li>Created in 1987 in response to the Carnegie Forum on Education release of A Nation Prepared: Teachers for the 21 st Century </li></ul><ul><li>Independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan and non-governmental organization governed by 63-member board of directors (majority are teachers) </li></ul>
  4. 5. Mission <ul><li>Advance the quality of teaching and learning by: </li></ul><ul><li>High and rigorous standards </li></ul><ul><li>National voluntary system certifying teachers </li></ul><ul><li>Advocate related education reforms </li></ul>

The Portfolio <ul><li>Four entries compose 1 portfolio entry </li></ul><ul><li>Each entry includes 11 page (max) written commentary and evidence </li></ul><ul><li>The three types of evidence: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Student Work Samples </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Videotape Entries </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Documented Accomplishments </li></ul></ul>
  7. 9. Assessment Center <ul><li>The format provides six 30-minute exercises over 3 hours . </li></ul><ul><li>Occurs between January 31 – June 30 of certification year </li></ul><ul><li>Computer based testing </li></ul>

Candidate Psychology 101 <ul><li>Candidates are breaking down and reconstructing their vision for their practice to align with National Teaching and Learning Standards </li></ul><ul><li>Portfolio entries and assessment center responses stand as testimony to meeting the standards </li></ul><ul><li>Control is based in following rules provided in their instructions, rubrics, and scoring and note-taking guides. </li></ul><ul><li>Frustration centers on making good choices on instruction, writing, and evidence selection. </li></ul>

Enter the ITRT… <ul><li>Candidates may seek assistance with the following during their candidacy: </li></ul><ul><li>Formatting the written commentary and cover sheets </li></ul><ul><li>Scanning and inserting into documents images </li></ul><ul><li>Videotaping equipment and strategies </li></ul><ul><li>Consultation on numerous levels within the portfolio and assessment center process </li></ul>

Ethical Candidate Support: Formatting Documents <ul><li>Hold candidates responsible for all formatting instructions and requirements </li></ul><ul><li>Provide assistance for common requests </li></ul><ul><ul><li>setting margins, font types, styles </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>scanning and inserting images </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>creating headers for page and candidate ID numbers </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Avoid affirming candidate interpretations, decisions, or evidence selections. </li></ul>

Ethical Candidate Support: Videotaping <ul><li>Hold candidates responsible for all videotaping instructions. </li></ul><ul><li>Identify what school owned recorders, media card readers, and microphones are available to meet their needs. </li></ul><ul><li>Avoid affirming candidate interpretations, decisions, or evidence selection. </li></ul>
