SSL's were first discovered in 1907 by, H. J. SSL's are highly energy efficient, contain no mercury, lead or other environmentally harmful chemicals, operate with low wattages, available in a wide spectrum of colors, ability to be dimmed, almost maintenance free, long lasting bulb life, and virtually heatless making them perfect to use in an aquatic application. Take for example a traditional incandescent lamp that losses up to 90% of the energy it take to run due to heat that emits from the bulb whereas with SSL's there is virtually no heat loss as well as operating with a lower wattage.

The SSL bulbs can come in a variety of colors including shades of red, blue or green, are low voltage and use less wattage than traditional lights.
