4. 4.

Your Choice. Book size, price, artwork – it’s all your choice.

You call the shots. No editors telling you what you can and cannot write and how you should or should not write it.

You retain the rights to your book. It’s your book, always and forever.

You take home a bigger royalty – if your book sells. In theory, your royalties are bigger than what a publisher can offer, but that is only if your book actually sells.

You set your own timeline. No pushy deadlines from your editor – do it at your own pace, in most cases.

WHY Self Publish? Why some writers choose the DIY route to writing books 3 Contact c ontact@ewebscapes.com / @LisaSabinWilson / facebook.com/lisasabinwilson Lisa SabinWilson Book Expo America 2011
 5. 5.

Truth: The odds are against you. On average, a self-published book sells about 100-150 copies, while traditional publishers aim to publish thousands, self-publishing companies aim for hundreds .

Truth: Self Publishers don’t care if your book is successful. They say they do, but they really don’t. YOU HAVE TO MAKE THEM CARE .

Truth: Self Publishers make money from YOU, not your book. The gold is in the services they sell you, not from the books that you sell.

Truth: Self Publishing is a contact sport. Books don’t sell themselves and by self-publishing you are also self-marketing. You have to be a relentless self promoter of your work – no one is going to do it for you. Truth is, many large publishing houses don’t do your marketing for you, either.

Truth: Self Published books don’t get reviewed, on average It’s hard to get self-published books reviewed and reviews sell books . This will change, eventually – the world didn’t take Bloggers seriously at first either.

WHY NOT Self Publish? Some ugly truths about self publishing – don’t say I didn’t warn you. 4 Contact c ontact@ewebscapes.com / @LisaSabinWilson / facebook.com/lisasabinwilson Lisa SabinWilson Book Expo America 2011
 6. 6. Get Organized and stay that way.

When you do not have anyone (ie: an editor) pushing you to meet pre-defined deadlines, you have to be very conscious of your time .

Use online calendars like Google Calendar to plot your writing schedule – then SHARE your calendar with friends, family and colleagues to collaborate and sync your schedules.

Google Calendar’s helpful features:

Pop up reminders

Share your calendar

Recurring events

Tasks

SMS & Email notification

5 Books don’t start making money … .until they are DONE .
