    13. 13. Top Explanations for Those Who Chose StudentExperience as One of Their Top Three Priorities13 General student experience, needs, andenrollment Student activities, involvement, and community Quality of education Opportunities for new/different learningexperiences Student recruitment and current enrollment Student retention Student preparedness before and after graduation
    14. 14. Sample CommentsGeneral student experience, needs, and enrollment14 “Students are the reason for the institution.” “As a student I often just feel like a statistic.” “I think that the Student Experience should be the top priority of the TransitionAdvisory Team because the students fund the school and make up theUniversity, and therefore should be the core concern of changes within the LSUsystem.” “This is a college, not strictly a business. We need to get back to students enjoyingthis time of their lives!!!” “If not for faculty and students, the university would not need to exist. Researchexpands existing knowledge and can transfer technology into application, but therole of the university is education of the populace, not training for jobs.”
    15. 15. Sample CommentsStudent activities, involvement, and community15 “I feel as if the other areas are well accounted for, but on the New Orleanscampus especially I do not personally feel connected with anyone other than mydepartment. I believe there could be more activities or event to unite the entirecampus. LSU in BR has an excellent student experience, and I feel as though that issomething the NO campus could improve the most.” “It is hard to know everything that is going on on campus. I wish there wassomething that I could look at all of the activities and plan out what I could go to.Even something where I could plug in my interests and see what is going on. Like ifthere were and easier way to search for things to do on campus each night. Thereare many things that I am still discovering that I wish I had known about in thepast.” “LSU needs to do a better job of valuing the student experience outside of theclassroom, providing tools for increased leadership and learningopportunities, and create a culture of student engagement beyond football!”
    16. 16. Sample CommentsQuality of education16 “If not for faculty and students, the university would not need to exist. Researchexpands existing knowledge and can transfer technology into application, but therole of the university is education of the populace, not training for jobs.” “We need to ensure that students have a rich experience on campus. Learningoccurs across a spectrum of environments, not just inside a classroom. Ensuringhigh quality programs and other educational endeavors is critical. Also, if yourstudents have a rich, well-rounded experience, they tend to give money back tothe institution once they graduate.” “LSU is has a mission to educate. It must focus on providing tools for success andenhanced student experiences to retain and attract students (which are also vitalto funding operations).”
    17. 17. Sample CommentsOpportunities for new/different learning experiences17 “More student interactive learning is needed to better bridge and integrate thebasic sciences and clinical aspects of medicine.” “Brick and mortar universities will only thrive if they provide a better learningexperience than online schools. Group learning, flipping courses to utilizeclassroom time for more than lecturing, and research experiences must beprovided at larger rates than currently done. The student experience must beconducive to learning in and out of the classroom.” “The student experience should be closely linked to academics.” “Once the Academic programs and finance situations are stable, the next stepwould be to ensure that students have access to the same experience regardlessof the campus attended. These experiences should include both those met in theclassroom as well as outside the classroom.”
    18. 18. Sample CommentsStudent recruitment and current enrollment18 “The students are who bring in the tuition dollars and thus their experience mustbe the best possible. Enhancing the student experience will help in futurerecruitment and possibly even in recruiting better professors to teach thestudents.” “If were not meeting student needs and expectations with regard to the "real"world, then we wont have much of an enrollment. Hence academics becomemoot.” “From a recruiting and retention standpoint, the Student Experience is critical. Itneeds to be addressed in terms not only for traditional students, but also not-traditional, international, and online students as well.” “Students should have the experience here that makes them want to give back toLSU. Not just financially, but also through volunteering, helping to recruit, andbeing proud to say they went to such a great school.”
    19. 19. Sample CommentsStudent preparedness before and after graduation19 “Better prepare students for real-world skills (i.e. job-hunting, budgeting, etc.)” “The UCFY and UCAC departments need to have better information prepared fornew students, with regard to moving into a students Major College. There seemsto be a communication issue between the two with what a students needs are formoving into their Major College. An example is that students are told that theyshould take electives instead of following their Major Colleges flow chart in casethey decide they do not want to major in that field.” “Beginning students need much better study skills coming out of high school, andthey need much more effective advisement on selecting a major and on careerchoices.” “I am student. At the heart of the mission of LSU is training and educatingstudents so they may better serve the public and the practice of medicine in thefuture. Students are most suffering from the inconsistencies in trainingsites, funding changes, access to patients and the lack of trained educators in theprivate sector of the private-public partnerships. Students are the future!”
    20. 20. Sample CommentsStudent retention20 “Without adequate student experience we will not be able to recruit students intothe LSU System. LSU Shreveport needs students life and dorms(!). I firmly believethat students who spend a lot of time on campus excel in their academic (andlater professional) life. This is directly correlated with retention. With students onour campus, we could get more students interested in research, studentactivities, etc.” “Positive Student Experience = Retention.” “Retention of students should be a top priority, and we do that by using class timeeffectively through active learning strategies and engaging students, buildingstudent networks and offering support services.” “The student experience creates retention and builds future strong alumni anddevelopment.”
