For the children

  1. 1. It’s not their fault their landlord refuses to do anything about the mold in their home.
  2. 2. It’s not their fault the food stamp office lost their paperwork and cancelled the family’s assistance.
  3. 3. It’s not their fault the mechanic working on their only car is claiming a lot of unauthorized work and now threatens to sell the car if their parents don’t pay for it.
  4. 4. It’s not their fault the man who hurts their mother has started hitting them, too.
  5. 5. It’s not their fault their father was fired because he refused to work “off the clock” for his boss.
  6. 6. They’ve done nothing wrong.
  7. 7. They did not cause these serious legal problems for their families.
  8. 8. They were not born into financially-troubled families by choice.
  9. 9. “ They” are the children in financially-troubled families in our country.
  10. 10. Some of them have always done without the things many kids take for granted.
  11. 11. Others used to have those things, but now have very little due to sudden changes in their worlds.
  12. 12. People charged with crimes get court-appointed lawyers in the United States.
  13. 13. Most states now help track down parents who owe child support.
  14. 14. Who will help these families fight their slumlords, straighten out their benefits claims, get protective orders, or reclaim their cars from shady mechanics? fight for unemployment insurance,
  15. 15. That is what the staff lawyers working in Legal Services and Legal Aid programs do everyday.
  16. 16. Or at least they DID until budget cuts at federal and state levels began to hurt their ability to do so.
  17. 17. It’s not their fault the budgets are out of balance.
  18. 18. Don’t balance those budgets at their expense.
  19. 19. You can help them.
  20. 20. Work to preserve or expand funding for civil legal aid in the United States and your state.
  21. 21. Volunteer to help your local legal aid program help more people.
  22. 22. Donate what you can.
  23. 23. Let people know that you believe in “liberty and justice for all.”
  24. 24. Do it for the children.
