The National Air Quality Site Assessment Tool (NAQSAT) has been developed for the voluntary use of livestock producers and their advisors or consultants. It is intended to provide assistance to livestock and poultry producers in determining the areas in their operations where there are opportunities to make changes that result in reduced air emissions. Air emissions research from livestock production systems is increasing every year. NAQSAT is based on the most accurate, credible data currently available regarding mitigation strategies for air emissions of ammonia, methane, volatile organic compounds, hydrogen sulfide, particulates, and odor.

  • 1. Using NAQSAT to Assess Air Quality ConcernsImportant Points About NAQSAT• Available online at no cost to the user• User friendly and may be run on any computerwith internet access• All inputs and results are confidential• Home page contains a user’s manual, helpfullinks, and a video to introduce the tool• May be used to assess management of airemissions on swine, dairy, beef, broiler chicken, laying hen, or turkey farmsThe National Air Quality Site Assessment Tool(NAQSAT) was developed for livestockproducers and their advisors who are interestedin investigating opportunities to reduce airemissions from their operation. The online tool is designed to provide farmersand their advisors airemissions informationexplicitly for their farmin a confidential setting. The tool may be run fromany computer with internetaccess. All information entered into NAQSATand the corresponding results remainconfidential.Users of NAQSAT may respond to questionsunder each of eight management categories.Based upon the responses to previouslyanswered questions, the program determineswhat additional questions need to be answeredso only questions pertaining to the operationare asked.NAQSAT sessions are saved on the hostcomputer for a minimum of 30 days.NAQSAT’s Effectiveness ResultsThe tool addresses seven emissions of concern ineight management categories. Within the resultspage the green area in each rectangle indicates theexpected effectiveness of current managementpractices, while the white area indicates theopportunity for improvement. Additional scenariosmay be run to measure the impact of improvedpractices. NAQSAT does not indicate any emissionrates or totals for the farm.NAQSATNational Air Quality Site Assessment ToolContributingpartners to thedevelopment ofNAQSAT:Beth Stuever, MSU ANRAuthors: G.
