Key national, local and trade print, broadcast & online media placements for clients, reaching millions of targeted consumers—including an audience reach of over 46 million for my client TARA, 1.8 million for Megumi, approx. 8 million for Begg, and a Quantcast monthly estimate of more than 45 million for key online placements for Portero.com. Prior to that I was responsible for a number of key placements for Clodagh Design (2007) and Harry Winston Diamond Corporation (2008), after starting my career as an intern assisting with numerous million-dollar press campaigns for Polo Ralph Lauren(2002, 2005/6).

  44. 44. Chicago Life ran a trend story on TARA 12-05-08 entitled “Wrap Around: Pamela DitmerMcKuen Covers the Statement Necklace", including the TARA Tahitian and white South SeaPearl necklace with black and white diamond flower, which was previously also featured onBravo’s Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style and on "The Today Shows Plaza Ambush Makeover" onNBC.Writer Pamela Ditmer McKuen explores the popularity of the statement necklace and hi-lightsquotes from various fashion experts and designers on what they see as current “statementpieces.” McKuen focuses on image consultant and author Eve Michaels as Michaels shares howto incorporate these styles and what necklines work best. The majority of those quoted agree thatpearls make a statement, and about half a dozen statement pieces mentioned include pearls. Theconsensus seems to be that in tough times, consumers are turning away from all-diamond piecesand favoring semi-precious stones or gem pieces, including pearl jewelry.“It’s not just a matter of big.” McKuen writes, “It’s about the mix and the silhouette. Silver andgold. New and old. Layers of chains or pearls or both. A bib of seed beads, a choker of crystals, atruly remarkable pendant, anything asymmetric.” I think this quote describes TARAs necklaceperfectly!Chicago Life is distributed to NY Times subscribers in the greater Chicago area and is edited forcontemporary Chicagoans concerned about issues and events shaping their lives. 66. 66. Cash Is the New BlackHard times mean the rich are selling a few Cartiers.by Jessica RamirezOctober 24, 2008Theres very little that can come between Melanie Fascitelli and designer labelslike Missoni and Jimmy Choo. The successful 32-year-old New Yorker—likemany of the ultrawealthy clients she assists through her custom-closet and stylistfirm—doesnt mind spending $3,200 on a Gucci bag or $6,800 on a Cartierwatch. But just as the current financial chaos has crippled the U.S. and worldmarkets, its also made even the most extravagant of consumers more cash-conscious. People who once collected Dior the way art dealers collect Degas arenow selling off valuable pieces through high-end consignment stores and onlinesites. "Its a way to get some money out of it," says Fascitelli, an avid consignerwho encourages her clients to do the same.In recent months, the high-end resale sector has been flooded with luxury items, thanks to the uncertain economy. According to a member survey by the NationalAssociation of Resale & Thrift Shops (NARTS), 75 percent of stores havereported an increase in new suppliers and 66 percent had an average increase insales of 35 percent when comparing the first eight months of this year with thesame period in 2007. "Even people whose shopping habits arent really affectedby whats going on look in their closet and think, Do I need 10 pairs of designershoes that look similar? " says Adele Meyer, executive director of NARTS.Part of the uptick does come from mass collectors who, in dicey times, haveopted for cash over, say, owning three Hermès Birkin bags. For others, consignment has simply become a way to justify new trinkets. "Its like, If I get ridof this item, then I dont feel bad about buying that one," says Fascitelli, whorecently bought herself a $1,200 Pucci dress with the money she got from piecesshe consigned at Designer Resale, a shop in New York City thats doing 20percent more in sales over last year.Consignment policies tend to vary among stores and online sites, but most willtake items they like and then divvy up profits with the seller, who can get asmuch as 70 percent of a sale. On the buying end, consumers are paying lessthan 50 percent of the retail cost for many items. Alice Reid, a 56-year-oldsalesperson from suburban New York, recently bought a Cartier watch for $9,135from Portero.com, a luxury-goods consignment Web site. The timepieces retail 66
  67. 67. price: $23,000. "Its so much more advantageous than going into a retailboutique," Reid says. "When you consider the caliber of what youre getting, its ano-brainer." The luxury-resale boon may be expanding into other areas likevintage wines and upscale furniture as well. Melanie Dunaway, owner of a high-end furniture consignment shop in Millersville, Md., says her sales are up 50percent since January. The unloading of luxury goods and the increased number of bargain hunters hascreated good times for the resale sector. Profits have leaped, with some shopssaying their sales have doubled and tripled. At the Daisy Shop on Oak Street inChicago, sales have increased 22 percent over this time last year. MichaelSheldon, founder and CEO of Portero.com, says sales on his site are threetimes greater than last year. "Things have improved for us remarkably since theeconomic downturn, both from a seller and buyer point of view." The numbersare especially striking given that high-end retail shops reported double-digitdeclines in same-store sales last month. Among the worst hit were BergdorfGoodman and Neiman Marcus, which posted a 16 percent drop. Saks was downby 11 percent. The National Retail Federation also predicts that overall retailsales this holiday season will grow a mere 2 percent, the weakest pace in sixyears.None of this paints a pretty picture for the worldwide luxury market, whichconventional wisdom suggested was recession-proof. Its true that the $270billion segment is still expected to grow about 2 percent this year once exchangerates are factored in, according to Bain & Co. But thats not nearly as good as the6.5 percent growth in 2007. "Few luxury brands are going to weather this globaleconomic crisis with impunity," says Pam Danziger, president of Unity Marketing,a firm that specializes in affluent consumer insights. In a new Unity survey, halfthe respondents said they are spending less on luxury items now compared to ayear ago. About 55 percent also expect to spend less in the next 12 months. ToDanziger, that marks a shift in consumer behavior among the wealthy. Optionslike consigning, which may have seemed foreign in the past, may now become apart of cutting their expenditures. Fascitelli, whose own business falls into theluxury category, believes the luxury market will bounce back, but sharesDanzigers view that the consumer will be different. "There will be a smarterconsumer, and maybe not as many mass collectors. This smarter consumer willconsign items." So even when the global economy stabilizes, theres a goodchance the rich will learn to muddle through with a little less bling if it means afew more dollars in their pockets. http://www.newsweek.com/2008/10/23/cash-is-the-new-black.html 67
