  3. 3. What is a STF Special Subject Council?…. <ul><li>The general purpose of subject councils is to provide opportunities for the professional development of their members. Special subject councils have been established in a variety of subject fields, service areas and interdisciplinary groups. The 32 councils that are affiliated with the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation have approximately 7,000 memberships in total. </li></ul><ul><li>Many special subject councils offer beginning teachers a complimentary one-year membership </li></ul><ul><li>The success of the program is measured by teacher interest in becoming members and taking an active role in the work of the councils. Membership is not limited to teachers, but includes any person with a professional interest in the activities of the councils. </li></ul>

What and Who is SHETA? <ul><li>SHETA - Saskatchewan Teachers Home Economics Teachers Association </li></ul><ul><li>SHETA is one of 32 Special Subject Councils in Saskatchewan that operate under the umbrella of the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation. </li></ul><ul><li>SHETA is an professional organization for educators. (Beginning, Active, Superannuated) </li></ul>
  5. 5. HOW did SHETA come to be? <ul><li>In 1968 three teachers from the Weyburn area met in the Junior High School to discuss ways to network with other teachers. From this discussion the idea of an conference and an association was born. </li></ul><ul><li>Along with the birth of the association came the first gathering of members in April, 1968 in Regina. </li></ul><ul><li>The first president was Liz Dowdeswell. </li></ul>

SHETA Objectives <ul><li>To strengthen, enrich, and promote Home Economics Education throughout Saskatchewan </li></ul><ul><li>To improve the quality of Home Economics Education in the education system. </li></ul><ul><li>To facilitate communication among all persons engaged in Home Economics. </li></ul><ul><li>To cooperate with and promote assistance to all allied organizations in Practical and Applied Arts, Health and Family To provide an opportunity annually of professional development in the subject area of PAA/Home Economics. </li></ul><ul><li>And of course…to always have FUN! </li></ul>

Membership <ul><li>Student $12.50 / Regular $25 Institutional $25 / Superannuates $12.50 Expiry Date: October 1 </li></ul><ul><li>All third and fourth years students in the undergraduate program at the University of Saskatchewan will be receiving memberships free. </li></ul><ul><li>First years teachers can apply and receive their SHETA membership free in their first year of teaching. </li></ul><ul><li>All paid members receive our twice a year publication VISTA. (November and April) </li></ul>

SHETA Conference <ul><li>Rotated through the province to provide a variety of presenters, ideas, themes and scenic changes for each conference. </li></ul><ul><li>Provide hands on learning experiences. (Make and Take is the favourite.) </li></ul><ul><li>Worked in partnership with ASHE . </li></ul><ul><li>Has been held annually since 1968, with our fall 2008 conference being our 40 th gathering. </li></ul>
  9. 9. 2008 Conference Highlights <ul><li>Attained a Special Subject Council Grant from STF to create 40 th Anniversary Public Relation items. $3500.00 </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Banner “Skills for Life” </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Display Board </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Notepads with SHETA Logo </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Bags with SHETA Logo </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Held in Regina, the original location of the first conference. </li></ul><ul><li>Two and half days of networking and celebration. </li></ul><ul><li>Had 100+ participants from across Saskatchewan </li></ul><ul><li>Liz Dowdeswell our first president was our keynote speaker. </li></ul><ul><li>Celebrated our past, present and look forward to our future. </li></ul><ul><li>Reintroduced the U of S Candle ceremony and ring ceremony. </li></ul><ul><li>Had a successful raffle that raised $ for HELP. </li></ul><ul><li>Had a great raffle that raised $ for our scholarship fund. </li></ul><ul><li>Announced our scholarship winner: Christine Miller. </li></ul><ul><li>Nine proposals for Summer Short Courses to the STF. </li></ul>

SHETA Online? <ul><li>http://ssc.stf.sk.ca/sheta/ </li></ul><ul><li>We have a free static website supported by the STF. </li></ul><ul><li>Updated monthly by the Board of Directors when possible. </li></ul><ul><li>We are currently in the process of updating the goals information and the resources provided. </li></ul><ul><li>Drawback is that it is no interactive. </li></ul>

Summary <ul><li>PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Maintain our past traditions: candle and rings. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Continue to support the University and keeping our department </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>We maintain a “good” membership. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>We have become proactive with our student members in helping them find us. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Our annual conference works to encompass the “new” things that come about. (PLC, LIP, Math, Literacy, Assessment) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Will continue to look at ways to educate our members through professional development. (conference, summer and other opportunities) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Welcome and support non home ec trained teachers. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Continue to make agencies aware of our expertise and knowledge. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>And of course…laugh and have lots of fun! </li></ul></ul>
