âIf I accept you as you are, I will make you worse; however if I treat you as
though you are what you are capable of becoming, I help you become thatâ
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
COACHING is unlocking potential through
action.
COACHING is helping people with
fundamental questions about their life.
COACHING is all about DREAMS.
COACHING is about future.
COACHING is a process that aims to
develop, challenge, support and
empower people to
achieve all their personal and professional
potential.
3. A coach´s assumptions:
1. ANSWERS â The coach only asks questions.
2. RESPECT â The map is not the territory.
3. FEEDBACK â There is no failure, there is only feedback!
4. RESSOURCES â Everybody has the resources inside them or they can acquire
them.
5. BEST OPTION AVAILABLE AT THE MOMENT
6. CAUSE - EFFECT â Every person creates his / her own reality.
7. ACTION! â If you want to understand - ACT!
8. FLEXIBILITY
9. POSITIVISM â All the behaviors have behind a positive intention.
6. Reality â Where am I ? Helping to see the reality of the situation, and beyond
the reality. Understand what is the reality of the coachee.
⢠What is worrying you?
⢠Are you happy with your term, team, etc?
⢠What do u think/feel about the situation?
⢠How was it until now?
⢠What would you like to transform in your team, yourself, etc?
⢠From a scale of 0 to 10 where is your self confidence regarding the situation?
⢠What are your biggest challenges?
⢠Can you tell me more about this situation?
⢠Applicable for all situations: WHAT CAN I HELP/SERVE U WITH?
⢠What is happening?
âReality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.â
Philip K. Dick
7. Objectives â Where do I want to go? Reflect on what you
want. Dream! Help the coachee to set an objective to move forward.
⢠Where do you want to get and in how long?
⢠What is your biggest dream?
⢠What will make u happier in this situation?
⢠What would you change?
⢠What are your priorities?
⢠What is the most incredible image that you have about this?
⢠From 0 to 10 what is the priority you give to this objective?
⢠Can you visualize/hear/feel/see achieving this objective?
⢠If you would have a magic wand what would you do?
⢠What do u want?
âThe majority see the obstacles;
the few see the objectives; history
records the successes of the
latter, while oblivion is the reward
of the former.â
Alfred A. Montapert
8. Solutions â How to get there? Techniques. Ideas + Ideas. Stimulate the
coachee to come up with as many solutions as possible, help him/her have a
BRAINSTORMING!
There are four types of ideas:
Obvious.
Interesting (+/-common)
Creative (originate conflicts, outside de box)
Innovative (ideas that nobody sees, and once seen become obvious).
⢠What have you already done for solving this?
⢠What are the alternatives that you have?
⢠What are some other better ways to do this?
⢠Did u talked with somebody else?
⢠Did u encountered similar situations?
⢠What would you do that you never can imagine yourself doing?
⢠Can you give me 3 solutions? can you give me 3 more?
⢠If I were in your situation what would you suggest?
⢠Who can be the person that could solve this for you?
⢠Very good! What else?
âEvery problem comes with
a baggage of solutions.â
Santosh Kalwar
9. Action - Do! Act ! Empower the coachee to set specific
actions that will get him/her to his objective.
⢠When are you going to do it?
⢠How much time will you take?
⢠What are you going to do until next meeting?
⢠What is a thing that you can do really easily?
⢠When are you going to begin/start?
⢠What are u going to do, with who and when?
If R., O. and S. are divergent questions, A. is a convergent question.
âWhatever you do will be insignificant, but
it is very important that you do it.â
Mahatma Gandhi
Don´t forget that each coachee is different, so the questions need to be adapted to
every person in particular. Remember that one of the coach´s assumptions is
Flexibility. And by practicing you will get to the point where you will create your own
questions, on the spot.
10. More on ACTION
Remember! Coaching is about dreams! & Coaching is about action!
The triple âWâ tool :
⢠what?
⢠with whom?
⢠when?
*The commitment in between the 2 parts that the action will be made could be a hand shake or a hug.
*If the action is not performed that is a feedback for the coach.
*If the coachee has difficulty in setting an action, then helpful support is asking what is the Next First Small Step that can be given towards
the objective.
Five frogs are sitting on a log. Four decide to jump off.
How many are left?
Answer: five.
Why? Because there's a difference between deciding and doing.
Mark L. Feldman & Michael F. Spratt, 'Five Frogs on a Log'
More questions for ACTION:
⢠What is the solution that has MAGIC?
⢠Which is the solution that makes sense?
⢠What are you going to do exactly?
⢠How would you know you achieved it?
⢠Time frame: When? Which day? What hour ?
⢠Deal?
11. Ethical principles of coaching
1. Confidentiality ( 0 names, 0 references )
2. Coachee´s autonomy. During the process, the coach creates
independence with the client, by the end of the process the coachee
has to be autonomous.
3. Be careful with the personal projections. If you cannot respect the world
map of the client don´t do coaching.
4. You can and you should use personal competencies, but don´t invent.
5. Contract is contract! â you don´t break them.
6. Auto-coaching - is an ethical obligation
Having roots is fundamental â gives u congruency. Ex: Make a personal
ROSA â at least once /year.
