Downloading Basics• The County of Los Angeles Public Library is excited to offer thousands of free eBooks for your eReader.• This slideshow is for the Barnes & Noble Nook, Sony Readers, Kobo, Pandigital, Literati and other eReaders that read EPUB formatted eBooks.• There is a separate slide show for Kindle users.• Your County of Los Angeles Public Library Card must be in good standing (cannot be barred, blocked or expired).• eBooks automatically expire - No late fees! Ever!• You can check out up to 10 items at one time.

Basic InstructionsOne-time set-up1. Download and install Adobe Digital Editions2. Create an Adobe ID3. Authorize computer and deviceChecking out and downloading eBooks1. Find, check out & download an EPUB eBook on your computer through OverDrive2. Connect the device to your computer with the cord3. Transfer the eBook to your device4. Eject device and enjoy your eBook!

Direct Downloads to eReaders• At this time, you cannot download directly to your device. – The exception is the Sony Reader Wi-Fi (PRS-T1) that allows direct downloading with a WiFi connection.• You will need to download the eBook to a PC/Windows or Mac computer first, then connect the device to the computer and transfer the eBook.• Improvements are constantly being made to this service, and we will continue to monitor the status of direct downloads.

OverDrive colapublib.org• eBooks are checked out through the program OverDrive• Go to the library’s Click Downloads OverDrive website for instructions & information• Click on Downloads or the Or, go directly to direct OverDrive OverDrive link

Installing Adobe Digital Editions #1• In order to download and transfer EPUB eBooks to your device, you need to install Adobe Digital Editions to your PC/Windows or Mac computer.• The software is free and easy to install. Please note this is different than the Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat you often find on computers to read PDF files. This software is designed to read eBooks.

Adobe Digital Editions #3• Adobe Digital Editions website will open• http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/• Click Install

Adobe Digital Editions #5• Open Adobe Digital Editions• Click Library then Authorize Computer

Adobe Digital Editions #6 Click Get an Adobe ID to get a free Adobe ID.• Follow instructions on the Setup Assistant• You will need an Adobe ID to transfer eBooks to your device. Click Get an Adobe ID

Adobe Digital Editions #7• Create an Adobe Account• https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership/• Make note of your Adobe ID and Password

Authorizing your Device - Adobe Digital Editions #8Plug in your device tothe computer (with thecord that came with thedevice). It will appearhere.• Plug in your device.• The Device Setup Assistant will appear. Click Authorize Device to authorize your device with your Adobe ID.• You are done with the one-time installation process.

Finding & Checking out EPUB eBooks• Now that you’ve installed Adobe Digital Editions, go to OverDrive and find EPUB eBooks to download & checkout!• Option A: Click on subjects on the left hand column of the Overdrive website.• Option B: Use Advanced Search (next slide)

OverDrive Advanced Search• Click Advanced Search• Change format to Adobe EPUB• You can leave the rest of the fields blank• Want a book right now? Check the box “Only show titles with copies available”

Selecting an eBook Click on the Title for more information about the book• From your search results, pick a book• Click on the Title for a full record

Full Record in OverDrive Full Record has: Format, Description, Excerpts, Reviews and Author information

Checking Out or Joining Waiting List• When you find a title, it will be available or will have a waiting list• Your choices will be: – Add to Cart – Join Waiting List• Next, we’ll show you: (1) How to add yourself to the waiting list and (2) Check out the eBook

Signing into OverDrive• If you haven’t signed into OverDrive yet, you will be asked to sign in when you add a book to your cart or place yourself on the waiting list• Enter your library card with no spaces

Joining Waiting List• If title is currently Be sure to select the checked out, click Join EPUB format (not the Waiting List Kindle format)• Enter your email address. Click Join Waiting List• When the eBook is available, you will receive an email from OverDrive. You will have 4 days (96 hours) exactly to check out the book from the OverDrive website.

Checking out – Step #1• If the book is available, click add to cart• Be sure to pick the EPUB version of the book

Checking out – Step #2• Click Proceed to Checkout from your cart• You have 30 minutes to finish your check out so it’s a good idea to check out right away!• Change the lending period in the next step

Checking out – Step #3• Choose a check out period (7, 14 or 21 days) – eBooks can be returned early if you finish them early• Click Confirm Check Out

Checking out – Step #4• Download page appears with check out & expiration date• Click Download

Checking out – Step #5Open with…Adobe Digital Editions • Open with Adobe Digital Editions • The download starts. The process is very quick.

eBook on Adobe Digital Editions Chapters listed• The eBook is now on Adobe Digital Editions.• You can read it on the computer.• Next, how to transfer it to your device.

Transferring to your device Drag the cover of the book onto the device When little circle is green, you can let goYour device willappear here • Plug in device with USB cord. Drag the cover of the book onto the device. The file transfers quickly. • After the transfer, safely eject device (like a flash drive). • The title should be on your device. On a Nook, look in the Digital Files folder. Enjoy your eBook!

Returning eBook Early• If you wish, you can Click left-hand corner Then Return… return eBooks early. It is not required; eBooks will automatically expire on the due date.• To return it early, go to Adobe Digital Editions. Click on the left-hand corner and click on Return Borrowed Item device.
