Downloading Basics• The County of Los Angeles Public Library is excited to offer free eBooks for your Kindle.• You’ll need a Kindle or a Kindle App installed on your phone, device or computer.• Your County of Los Angeles Public Library Card must be in good standing (cannot be barred, blocked or expired).• eBooks automatically expire - No late fees! Ever!• You can check out up to 10 items at one time.• Thousands of eBooks available.

Kindle Apps• You don’t need a Kindle device to download Kindle eBooks! You can use a Kindle App installed on your device or computer.• Available for: – Kindle for PC or Mac: read on your computer screen – Kindle Cloud Reader: read on computer internet anywhere – Kindle for iPhone / iPod Touch – Kindle for iPad – Kindle for Android phones and tablets – Kindle for Windows Phone 7

No Direct Downloads from Kindles & Mobile Devices• At this time, you cannot download directly from Kindle devices or “small screen” mobile device such as an iPhone, Android phone or device.• You will need to check out on a PC or Mac computer first, then transfer/deliver to your device.• Improvements are constantly being made to this service, and we will continue to monitor the status of mobile access.

Let’s Get Started! colapublib.org• Go to the library’s OverDrive website• Must start on the OverDrive site Click Downloads (you will not find for instructions & our eBooks on information Amazon’s site)• Click on Downloads or Or, go directly to the direct OverDrive OverDrive link

Finding Kindle eBooks• Option A: Coming soon, there will be a link on the left hand column that will allow you to see all the Kindle eBooks• Option B: Use Advanced Search (next slide)

OverDrive Advanced Search• Click Advanced Search• Change format to Kindle• You can leave the rest of the fields blank• Want a book right now? Check the box “Only show titles with copies available”

Selecting an eBook Click on the Title for more information about the book• From your search results, pick a book• Click on the Title for a full record

Full Record in OverDrive Full Record has: Format, Description, Excerpts, Reviews and Author information

Checking Out or Joining Waiting List• When you find a title, it will be available or will have a waiting list• Your choices will be: – Add to Cart – Join Waiting List• Next, we’ll show you: (1) How to add yourself to the waiting list and (2) Check out the eBook

Signing into OverDrive• If you haven’t signed into OverDrive yet, you will be asked to sign in when you add a book to your cart or place yourself on the waiting list• Enter your library card with no spaces

Joining Waiting List Be sure to select the• If title is currently Kindle format (not checked out, click Join the EPUB format) Waiting List• Enter your email address. Click Join Waiting List• When the eBook is available, you will receive an email from OverDrive. You will have 4 days (96 hours) exactly to check out the book from the OverDrive website.

Checking out – Step #1• If the book is available, click add to cart• Be sure to pick the Kindle version of the book

Checking out – Step #2• Click Proceed to Checkout from your cart• You have 30 minutes to finish your check out so it’s a good idea to check out right away!• Change the lending period in the next step

Checking out – Step #3• Choose a check out period (7, 14 or 21 days) – eBooks can be returned early if you finish them early• Click Confirm Check Out

Checking out – Step #4• Download page appears with check out & expiration date• Click Get for Kindle• Amazon website will open

Checking out – Step #5• Log into your Amazon account or create a free account• Click Get Library Book• If your Kindle has Wi-Fi, the eBook will be transferred automatically. Enjoy!

Transferring to Kindle Device• OverDrive Public Library eBooks will not transfer via the Amazon Kindle’s 3G connection• Library eBooks require an active Wi-Fi connection on a Kindle device. If you have Wi-Fi, the book will load onto your Kindle.• If you don’t have Wi-Fi, don’t worry. We’ll show you how to download using your USB cord.• SPECIAL NOTE: As of February 12, 2012, library eBooks published by Penguin cannot be wirelessly downloaded to Kindles. In order to read this publisher’s eBooks on a Kindle, you will need to transfer via USB.

Transferring via USB• To transfer via USB, click Download Now to save the file onto your computer

Kindle – USB Transfer• If you have multiple devices, select the Kindle• Click Download• Save the file onto your computer

Kindle – USB Transfer• Find the downloaded file on your computer. It will end with .azw• Check this folder: My Documents  Downloads

Kindle – USB Transfer• Plug in your Kindle into your computer with the USB cord that came with the Kindle• Find the Kindle on My Computer• Open the Kindle and find the Documents folder

Kindle – USB Transfer The transfer should only take a few seconds• Drag the Amazon book onto your Kindle’s Documents folder. Safely unplug your Kindle.• Enjoy your eBook!• Amazon has a video of the USB transfer process. The link is on the OverDrive Help page.
