    @ LubomirP

While I certainly could use the money, I hope you win the contest. Your presentation is simply amazing! And your English (and attitude about language) are both great, too!

You mentioned in the comments section of your presenation that you are inspired to do another presentation but haven’t chosen a topic yet. I really hope you choose something related to langauges! Perhaps a story about how you learned English? It would be great to hear your viewpoint and see how you apply your design skills to the subject.

Thank You Kindly for your comments on my presentation.

I share your view of learning languages, and as you can see I go even further - I speak English only by feel, and I am totally opened for mistakes :)

Sorry, I accidentally deleted the following post from @ prosperdebruyn. I’m still getting used to Apple trackpad gestures... Fortunately I had the page open in 2 different browsers. Here it is:

Completely wrong; I’m fluently in Dutch, French, English and German. I can manage in Spanish, Portguese and Norwegian. I can read and understand Danish and Swedish texts, and a great part of Finish texts, and I know a little bit Chinese and Russian, and I can assure you, theres is only one good way: grammar, vocabulary, exercises....work, work, work, try to feel the language...

Thank you for the kind words. I am very happy people are finding this helpful.

Onwards and upwards! Or perhaps a better phrase would be 改善 ('constant improvement,' pronounced 'gai3 shan4' in Chinese or 'kaizen' in Japanese.)

    @ prosperdebruyn

Thank you for your comment. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and the beauty of this site (and others like it) is that we can easily share them with the world.

First of all, I would say that you probably have high 'linguistic intelligence.'
(If you’re not familiar with Howard Gardner’s 'Theory of Multiple Intelligences,' you can read up on it on Wikipedia.) Unfortunately, the traditional education system only focuses on (and benefits those with) linguistic and logical-mathematicl intelligence. The problem is that many, if not most, learners are stronger in many other areas (visual intellgence, musical intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, etc. Grammar study is simply not effective for these kind of learners. Period.

Also, I must point out that depsite your love of grammar and claims of fluency, your writing is full of grammatical errors. For example, 'I’m fluently in English' should be 'I’m fluent in English.' I don’t aim to criticize you, but truth is truth. To be fair, your English is very good, and I applaud you for reaching either oral or written fluency in so many languages.

I leave you with this: if studying grammar, vocabulary and exercises is so effective, why do the vast majority of learners emerge from 10 or more years of study unable to converse in a language? It can’t be that they are just not trying hard enough.

Language Learning: Why Most Fail and How YOU Can Succeed - Presentation Transcript

  1. Language Learning Why Most Fail and How You Can Succeed
  2. Fact: The vast majority of language learners fail to reach fluency in their target language even after years and years of study.
  3. Test: Is this because of their: a) method b) attitude c) materials d) all of the above
  4. The answer is d). Nearly all learners fail because of poor methods, poor attitudes, and poor materials.
  5. Methods
  6. Traditional language education fails because it treats language as an academic subject, not the physical skill it truly is.
  7. Learning is like...
  8. ...memorizing parts of a car engine and being able to explain how it works. It is a conscious process.
  9. Acquisition is like...
  10. ...being able to drive but not necessarily knowing how the car engine works. It is a subconscious process.
  11. Most people can never use a language because they spend too much time learning about the language and not enough time actually acquiring it.
  12. So if traditional methods are so ineffective, why have they survived soooo long?
  13. The Weight of Tradition
  14. Though there have been many “cosmetic” changes over the years, languages have been taught in the same basic way for millennia.
  15. ce a n r & no Arrogance Ig
  16. Most people don’t know (or won’t admit) that there are better ways.
  17. Vested Interests
  18. Textbook publishers, language schools, teachers, and even politicians, all benefit financially from the traditional education status quo
  19. Attitude
  20. “In language learning it is attitude, not aptitude, that determines success.” ~Steve Kaufmann, creator of LingQ.com So what kind of attitude do you need to succeed in language learning? One must be...
  21. Interested! The more you like the content, the more you that will stick (and the more time you will spend with the language!)
  22. Disciplined! You won’t always feel like learning. But if you only do things when you feel like it, you won’t get very far.
  23. Patient! Language learning isn’t hard, but it does take time. Progress in physical skills can be hard to notice, so make sure to record yourself every few months.
  24. Free of the ego! Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. When you do, be happy about it! You have just made progress!
  25. Materials
  26. With so much FREE, high quality language learning content available online, there is no excuse to consume boring content.
  27. There are over 100,000 podcasts series available today on a wide range of topics and in all the world’s major languages. And with the advent of portable media players, you can carry all this content around with you.
  28. “It’s too expensive” and “I don’t have time” are no longer valid excuses!
  29. Happy Learning!
