3. Introduction-
In Vehicle tracking project, you can track
the location of your Vehicle.
This project gives about vehicle location by
sending sms through GSM modem.
This SMS contains longitude and latitude of
the location of vehicle.
Microcontroller is the central processing
unit CPU of our project.
Microcontroller gets the coordinates from
GPS modem and then it sends this
information to the user in Text SMS.
4. What is Vehicle Tracking & locking
System?
The device consists of a micro-controller
interfaced with a GPS and a GSM module
The GPS module receives the information of the
vehicle and passes it to the controller.
The controller extracts the required information
and makes a packet out of it that consists of
geographical data and other information.
This packet is passed to the gsm device that is
configured for point to point
A software will display the current position of the
vehicle on the map
By the gsm module we can lock the fuel of vehicle
when we want to do this.
5. Technology Used for VTS

via GSM, SMS or Data Line
Monitoring the Vehicle Online
Tracking the position of the vehicle on digital
maps.
6. This project consists of
following blocks:
1) GPS Modem
2) GSM Modem
3) Microcontroller
4) LCD Display
5) Power Supply
11. GSM Module
GSM module is used to establish communication between a computer
and a GSM system. Global System for Mobile communication
(GSM) is an architecture used for mobile communication in most of the
countries. Global Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is an extension of
GSM that enables higher data transmission rate. GSM/GPRS module
consists of a GSM/GPRS modem assembled together with power
supply circuit and communication interfaces (like RS-232, USB,
etc) for computer. The MODEM is the soul of such modules.
12. GSM MODEM
GSM MODEM is a class of wireless MODEM devices that are designed for
communication of a computer with the GSM network. It requires a SIM
(Subscriber Identity Module) card just like mobile phones to activate
communication with the network. Also they have IMEI (International Mobile
Equipment Identity) number similar to mobile phones for their identification.
A GSM/GPRS MODEM can perform the following operations:
1. Receive, send or delete SMS messages in a SIM.
2. Read, add, search phonebook entries of the SIM.
3. Make, Receive, or reject a voice call.
The MODEM needs AT commands, for interacting with processor or
controller, which are communicated through serial communication. These
commands are sent by the controller/processor. The MODEM sends back a
result after it receives a command. Different AT commands supported by
the MODEM can be sent by the processor/controller/computer to interact
with the GSM cellular network.
13. How GPS Works
The GPS system currently has 31 active satellites in orbits inclined 55
degrees to the equator. The satellites orbit about 20,000km from the
earth's surface and make two orbits per day. The orbits are designed so
that there are always 6 satellites in view, from most places on the earth.
The GPS receiver gets a signal from each GPS satellite. The satellites
transmit the exact time the signals are sent. By subtracting the time the
signal was transmitted from the time it was received, the GPS can tell
how far it is from each satellite. The GPS receiver also knows the exact
position in the sky of the satellites, at the moment they sent their
signals. So given the travel time of the GPS signals from three satellites
and their exact position in the sky, the GPS receiver can determine
your position in three dimensions - east, north and altitude.
There is a complication. To calculate the time the GPS signals took to
arrive, the GPS receiver needs to know the time very accurately. The
GPS satellites have atomic clocks that keep very precise time, but it's
not feasible to equip a GPS receiver with an atomic clock. However, if
the GPS receiver uses the signal from a fourth satellite it can solve an
equation that lets it determine the exact time, without needing an
atomic clock.
15. If the GPS receiver is only able to get signals from 3 satellites, you
can still get your position, but it will be less accurate. As we noted
above, the GPS receiver needs 4 satellites to work out your position
in 3-dimensions. If only 3 satellites are available, the GPS receiver
can get an approximate position by making the assumption that you
are at mean sea level. If you really are at mean sea level, the position
will be reasonably accurate. However if you are in the mountains, the
2-D fix could be hundreds of metres off.
A modern GPS receiver will typically track all of the available
satellites simultaneously, but only a selection of them will be used to
calculate your position.
16. Contents of Text sms are as below:
Coordinates of Vehicle :-
Longitude = 18 38.6878 N
Latitude = 73 45.3423 E
17. How to track the location on
Actual Map
It would be time consuming to track
location on Printed maps. But now a days
various websites are available on internet
which shows online map.
Google maps is one of the main and useful
website to track or find the location of
vehicle.
You can track the location using Longitude
and Latitude received in SMS.
Using these maps you can get the exact
location as well as directions to go to those
places from your current/desired location.
19. Applications-
School transport Tracking: “Vehicle
tracking system” can be used in the
school bus for tracking.
This project can be used for detection
of cab or car of companies.
Theft Protection: This project can be
very useful when your vehicle or car is
stolen.
