• Poor participation in the course

  • 2. Institute Background • A leading University, delivering under graduate, post graduate courses. Professional courses and skilled based Vocational Education courses are also delivered • Multiple campuses • Central Capability and Capacity building unit for the organisation • Short accredited courses offer certificates and non accredited courses offer participation certificate • Professional development courses – do not offer or record participation/certificates • With more learning technology, the organisation encourages staff to be Technology ready, innovative course deliverers
  • 3. Offer Training • Technology • Course Development • Course delivery Staff attend training Use Knowledge and Skills in course delivery with students The Current Ecosystem in operation… Employer - University
  • 4. Over view of the current Ecosystem’s operation • Professional Development unit offers training: • Technology for innovative learning and teaching- Use of: • LMS functionalities • Virtual Classroom • Plagiarism detect tools • ePortfolio • Learning analytics • Online course delivery (e.g. eModerating) • Online Course Development(e.g. Carpe Diems) • Staff attend training • Staff gain Certificate of Completion Certificate for some training • Staff use the knowledge and skills in their course delivery

Professional Development Unit • The PD units trainers identify: • New technology and lead the institute to gain access them • Support staff through training to: • Use new technology • Use new features of existing technology • Provide ideas and implementation assistance • Provide learning resources and guides as well as examples • Challenges: • Staff not attending sessions • Staff with drawing from courses • Poor participation in the course Let me train staff so that they be 21st century innovative teachers

Staff attending training • Staff who are enthusiastic take up PD • Staff who need to use new technology participate in PD • Staff who have been assigned to use new technology participate in PD sessions • Challenges: • Less recognition from the institute • Does not support career aspirations • Does not take into account the current workload I hardly have time to learn and use these new things, since my students need them I will give it a try!
  • 7. Employer- University HR and Faculty Dean(s) • Staff are encouraged to take up Teaching and Learning PD • Staff who need to use new technology are welcome to participate in PD • Some staff are assigned to use new technology and participate in PD sessions • Challenges: • HR system does not recognise Teaching and Learning PD • Deans academic coordinators do not have to approve some of these training • Has less impact on promotions or current workload Teaching and Learning PD is part of academics job!
  • 8. Planning for a better Ecosystem for Capability Building • Create a strategy • Gain support from the management • Pilot the idea • Gather feedback • Either re-iterate or proceed • Communicate and present at forums and committee • Use the badging system to motivate staff and to build an ecosystem
