  1. 1. EDWARD IV <ul><li>Edward IV ( 28 April 1442 – 9 April 1483 ) was King of England from 4 March 1461 until 2 October 1470 , and again from 11 April 1471 until his death. </li></ul>
  2. 2. <ul><li>Edward of York was born on June, 19 , 1442 , at Rouen in France , the second son of Richard, 3rd Duke of York and Cecily Neville . </li></ul><ul><li>The eldest of the four sons who survived to adulthood. </li></ul><ul><li>The Duke of York's assertion of his claim to the crown in 1460 was the key escalation of the conflict known as the Wars of the Roses . </li></ul><ul><li>Edward inherited his father`s claim, who was killed at the Battle of Wakefield </li></ul>

Accession to the Throne <ul><li>With the support of his cousin, Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick , Edward defeated the Lancastrians in a succession of battles . </li></ul><ul><li>While Henry VI and his queen Margaret of Anjou were campaigning in the north of England, Warwick gained control of the capital and had Edward declared king in London in 1461. </li></ul><ul><li>Strengthened his claim with a victory at the Battle of Towton. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Overthrow <ul><li>The Earl of Warwick led an army against Edward </li></ul><ul><li>In 1469 The king`s army was defeated at the Battle of Edgecote Moor. </li></ul><ul><li>Edward was captured at Olney. Warwick attempted to rule in Edward`s name. </li></ul>

Restoration <ul><li>Warwick was forced to release Edward. </li></ul><ul><li>Edward was forced to flee by Warwick`s brother John Neville. </li></ul><ul><li>Edward took refuge in Burgundy and raised an army to win back his kingdom. </li></ul><ul><li>He gathered support and reunited with his brother George, Duke of Clarence. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>Edward & bros. defeated Warwick at the Battle of Barnet. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1471 he eliminated the remaining Lancastrian resistance at the Battle of Tewkesbury </li></ul><ul><li>In 1475 declared war on France and came to terms with the Treaty of Picquigny which provided him with 75,000 crowns immediately and 50,000 crowns yearly. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1483 Edward fell fatally ill and died on 9 April (pobably of pneumonia yphoidwas poisoned) </li></ul>
