1. 1. Tribes & While you weren’t Watching Two Social Media Benchmarks Melissa Louis MKTG 6900 Fall 2009
 2. 2. Tribes - Overview

Any person with an idea that he feels passionate about can start a tribe

The qualities required by a leader of a tribe are only drive and strong belief in your idea

You do not need to have a 100+ followers to have successfully started a tribe

More people need to start tribes

What is a tribe?

A group of people who are connected to one another and share a leader and an interest

Why start a tribe??

Working in stuff that you believe in is so much more satisfying than not

Methods of communications make it incredibly easy to start one

 3. 3. Tribes – Key Arguments

Most organizations spend their time marketing to a crowd

Smart organizations focus their efforts and assemble the crowd

A true fan is a member of a tribe who cares deeply about you and your work

You only need a few true fans, because a true fan will spread (likely glorify) the word and expand the tribe

Most people are passionate about something- one of the key factors that restricts their ability to start a tribe is fear

You need to think your way out of fear and understand that fear of failure is overrated

True leaders are generous, their drive is what motivates them, not monetary benefit

True leaders don’t care about credit

Imagination is more important than knowledge

 4. 4. Tribes – Review and Suggestions

Interesting , inspiring book

The non-traditional approach to being a leader was the most valuable

Encourages being different from the norm - you can be a unicorn (the rebel, the extraordinaire)

You don’t need a huge tribe

You can be a leader within you own community, all you need is a few members that share your passion

There are infinite boundaries to the limits of your tribe

Certain sections of the book were a little repetitive, however every reiterated point had new, insightful examples, and made connections to other sections of the book

The quality of the evidence was interesting and very inspiring

The author used real world examples constantly

 5. 5. While you were watching - Overview

The face of the media environment has changed with a shift in power from the media to the consumer, particularly the young consumer

The young consumer has 5 objectives that they want fulfilled by companies:

Connect with their lives

Give them control

Given them the ability to reach out and touch the brand

Allow them to be involved

Entertain them

Companies need to change their marketing strategies and find a crucial balance between information and entertainment

 6. 6. While you were watching – Key Arguments

Tribalist – Interestingly enough, this book refers to the tribalist as well

Similar to ‘Tribes’, the tribalist is able to experience a sense of empowerment

Empowering and educating yourself with the numerous information that is out there

Self Marketers

Amateurs and professionals now have a level playing field

Digital Media – Intellectually Stimulating

The complexity of T.V shows, video games etc. have significantly increased (24, World of Warcraft)

Reality T.V and Celebrity Commercials

Connects you the audiences to being a star

Who’s Leading Who?

Younger people are starting to influence their parents and their adoption of products

 7. 7. While you weren’t watching – Review and Suggestions

Interesting book, quick read with catchy phrases, and ‘cool’ examples

Message of the book came out loud and clear

Companies need to change their marketing strategies in light of the new media environment

They need to cater to the needs of the younger crowds who are digitally driven and want to be noticed

The book uses pictures and catchy phrases which keep the reader intrigued

Could have provided more information on certain material, although that may not have been the objective behind the book

The quality of the evidence was almost enlightening

Implicit consequences of social media marketing were raised and discussed

 8. 8. Social Media Marketing Focused Takeaways

Ripple affect

You only need to get your message across to a few people well, and it will spread, gather more ideas and spread even more

Social Media Marketing doesn’t necessarily have to be digital

any setting where a group of people collaborate about a certain cause or opinion can be considered social media

Digital can be the most effective tool since you can reach vast numbers of people in a short time period

Definition – A group of people, sharing a passion, that come together under the leadership of an initiative taker, but flourish under the efforts of the members – has no set structure

Social Media Marketing cannot be controlled

Delivery Methods for Social Media are the internet (blogs, twitter, wikki etc.), radio & television discussions, in person meetings

 9. 9. Social Media Marketing Takeaways

The internet is likely one of the most powerful social media marketing tools, although with the least amount of control in the hands of the marketer

Marketers need to find ways to connect with their consumers, using the internet

A strategy for a marketer could be to start a tribe through a blog,

get consumers passionate about voicing their opinions, good or bad

take the bad feedback and make improvements

Attempt to channel the direction of the tribe and then let it flourish
