5 Reasons Why You Should Set Your Goals Before Investing

  1. 1. Reasons Why You Should Set Your Goals Before Investing
  2. 2. Investment strategy If you want to double your assets in value, then your goal is capital appreciation. This means, you need to have an aggressive investment strategy. Having a goal, provides direction and more importantly, it helps you determine an investment strategy. 1
  3. 3. Capital Preservation If your aim is to build savings for the future, your goal is capital preservation, so your strategy will be to protect yourself from inflation and hence select investment options that give more profits than inflation. Setting goals helps in selecting investment options. 2
  4. 4. Investment Time Period An investor can have short goals meant to be achieved for a particular reason over a shorter period of time. For example, buying a car or a house. This has an impact on the strategy for investment opted. Thus, goals provide a timeline for investments. 3
  5. 5. Secondary Source of Income Say your goal is to ensure you have enough cash in hand, which maybe over and above your primary income through salary, then your investments need to be tailored such that you have an additional source of income, which is possible through investment options that regularly pay dividends. Goals help define your investment needs and accordingly narrow down on available investment options. 4
  6. 6. Identifying Risk Appetite Usually, investments that provide higher returns are riskier than those options providing low returns. If the risk involved surpasses the investor’s ability to take risk, then the goal, and subsequently the strategy, needs to be adjusted. Thus, setting a goal gives perspective about the quantity of risk that needs to be taken. 5
