Theme 5. Using ICT; Flexible and Distance Learning.

Rafael discussed E-Learning as an innovative approach to problem solving and information literacy for critical thinking in advancing science and technology in the Pacific. He discussed learning in relation to the development of knowledge and understanding. The Internet appears to be reshaping teaching, learning and research. Therefore it is important that academic libraries take a leading role to support web-based e-learning by creating and developing new services and linking them to the various programmes in universities and research organisations. Electronic delivery can change the way faculty and students, organisations and communities access, create and use information, and libraries will continue to play a central role in linking all to quality information sources.

    • The Internet appears to be delivering to reshape learning, teaching and research. Therefore it is important that academics libraries take a leading role to support Web-based e-learning by creating and developing new services and linking them to various programs in universities and research organisations.
    • E-learning represent a golden opportunity for academic libraries to expand their role in the digital age and to support research, teaching, learning and community service as they have been doing in the past but in e-ways now.
    • This is a very exciting time for all of us. Electronic delivery can change the way faculty and students, organisations and communities access, create and use information, and libraries will still play a central role in linking all to quality information sources be in the library or the internet.

    • Objectives are: To provide students with an understanding of the various statutory and common law as they apply to corporations and businesses of Papua New Guinea, and to familiarize them with the operative and clinical aspects of the corporate/business laws with which they will have to deal in their professional careers.     • On completion of the subject, the students will be able to:
      • 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the legal requirements of the Partnership Act, and with the case laws developed by the courts, in such a way as to be able to advise clients of the essential provisions of those requirements. (+how +legal +requirement +partnership +act)
      • 2. Demonstrate knowledge of the provisions of the Lands Groups Act and the Business Groups Act to such an extent as to be able to render independent professional advice to those seeking such assistance.

    • This is the most primitive part of the brain and is sometimes called the Reptilian Brain. It controls instincts connected with ones safety and survival. When this part of our brain is dominating behavior, we have little access to our higher brain functions. This means that the best state of mind for studying is one with as little stress as possible
    Middle Brain
    • This part of the brain, which is also called the Mammalian Brain, functions much the same as the brain in most other mammals. It controls the emotions, sexuality and the immune and hormonal systems. The middle brain is the site of long term memory and this explains why the memory of emotionally rich events is generally long term and powerful.
    Higher Brain
    • Higher Brain
    • The outermost layer of the brain, which is also called the Cortical Brain, controls the ability to reason, set goals, develop language and conceive abstract ideas. It makes sense of all the input one receives. To energise ones brain and get the most out of it, the special cells and structures that connect the different parts of the brain must allow efficient communication. This efficient communication must occur within and between each section of the brain. This happens in a state called relaxed alertness.

    • The corporate market for e-learning in 2004 is estimated at $23 billion, up from less than $2 billion five years ago.
    • Two e-learning companies are in the top ten of Fortune magazine’s 100 fastest growing companies: Career Education ($849 million) and Corinthian Colleges ($473 million).
    • Enrollment growth in the online program of the University of Phoenix, one of the first accredited universities to provide college degrees via the Internet, was up 61 percent in 2003 from the year before.

    • E-learning is also the term used to describe corporate or work-based e-learning. In 2001, estimated worldwide revenues for 2004 for corporate e-learning were just over US$23 billion dollars, up from less than $2 billion at year-end in 1999.10 Companies purchase e-learning for workers for many of the same reasons that individuals take university courses online: travel time is reduced, infrastructure costs are low, delivery is platform independent and learning anywhere and anytime is enabled.
