I decided to do so many due to the fact different
genres and bands lead to different creative and
amazing music videos. Looking at one genre and
going against convention by using attributes
from other genres can lead to an interesting
music video.
Sara Bareilles - Brave
• "Brave" is a song by American singer-
songwriter Sara Bareilles, taken from her
fourth studio album, The Blessed
Unrest (2013). The song was written by
Bareilles and Jack Antonoff from the
band fun. She was inspired from the
struggles that a close friend dealt with in
regard to coming out. Bareilles
requested Mark Endert to produce it with
the explicit goal of radio airplay. "Brave"
was released worldwide through digital
download on April 23, 2013 as the lead
single from the album, through Epic
Records.
Genre & Characteristics
• Much like Taylor Swifts video
Shake it off this is a Pop genre
and will have similar
characteristics. The music is very
upbeat and it’s a very uplifting
message being spread. Since the
motivation is about her friend the
video will be very positive. It’s
shot in a mix of handheld
cameras and the use of tripods.
The handheld cameras creates a
feeling of naturalness and like
they are being watched/filmed as
they dance. The singer is also the
main focus of the music video
and the rest of the actors are
secondary characters.
Genre & Characteristics
• Unlike usual pop videos this music video is performance based and it
focuses on being embarrassing and sort of pranking the people around
them but having a fun time, very much like Taylor Swifts –Shake it Off it’s
about being yourself and not caring what others think.
Lyrics and the Visuals
• The video is done in a one man flash mob type of style, it depicts people
dancing in open places and by the end of the video it’s revealed they’re
dancing to no music. This emphasises the idea of being brave.
• The motivation is from her friend who had trouble with coming out, whilst
the lyrics don’t directly link with sexuality the notion of bravery and being
yourself this is mostly shown through the chorus – ‘Say what you wanna
say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave With
what you want to say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you
be brave’
Music and the Visual
• The music is very up-beat and pop stylish this corresponds to the dancing
and up-beat happy feeling from the visuals. It’s very similar to Shake it off
by Taylor swift, this is usual with the pop genre as a lot of videos end up
being similar.
• It’s disputed that Katy Perry stole the music for her song Roar, both artists
have agreed that didn’t happen however this shows how the pop genre is
so similar and it makes it difficult to differentiate.
Demands of the Label
• There isn’t much of a narrative and instead it focuses on a point of view
shot where the audience is watching. Of course Sara is going to have a very
clean and happy image due to being a pop star such as Taylor Swift and
Katy Perry. Close ups as well establish Sara as the singer and the most
important
Emphasis of Looking
• Sara is constantly shown as the singer and this draws attention to her
more than the other actors/dancers. However, this isn’t sexualised as a lot
of women are, since it’s spreading a positive message it has close ups to
give the feeling that she is actually interacting with the audience.
Intertextual references
• Much of the song has to do with coming out of the closet. She refers to the
millions of gay rights activists, including those openly gay, who have used
their homosexuality as a tool to combat against the opposition. This isn’t
particularly shown in the video as it’s more of a supporting video towards
her friend and anyone else. The generalisation of it means it can be
applied to any type of situation that someone needs to be brave in this
reaches to a wider audience and does not focus too much on LGBT.
• Otherwise there are no other references to the outer world than the video.
Hayley Kiyoko – Girls Like Girls
• Hayley Kiyoko is an independent artist
who rose to fame through Disney films
and due to her parents already being
quite famous. The EP was recorded in her
parent's garage in Los Angeles with
British producer James Flannigan. Kiyoko
also collaborated with Swedish producer
Anders Grahn. The music video for her
song "Girls Like Girls" was released on
June 24th, 2015. She and Austin Winchell
both directed the video. The actors she
used all starred in films with her
previously and therefore it is a very
personal project.
Genre & Characteristics
• The genre of the music is electropop due to the
instruments being artificially created using synthesisers.
However the actual video has more of a niche feel to it
and much more indie. This is due to the fact it openly
shows two girls in a relationship, a lot of indie and
unpopular artist do this and it is sometimes shown in
recent songs by popular artist but it’s not focused on the
two girls, an example of this is Charlie Puth & Meghan
Trainor – Marvin Gaye this is because they do show same
sex relationships but it is primarily heterosexual. This
type of video focuses on a same sex relationship and
portrays it in a very natural way. It is very narrative based
and does not feature the artist at all, it focuses on the two
girl actresses and male actor.
• The story is very well told and the relationship is built for
the audience to support the girl character and they hold a
lot of chemistry together.
• It is also shot with a orange/red tone over it to give a very
warm and nostalgic feel to it – this is always used in indie
types of music.
Lyrics and the Visuals
• The lyrics and visuals closely match up due to it being what the
entire song is about. This goes against the indie stereotype as a lot
of indie songs don’t actually show and sing about what's going on –
an example being Pumped up Kicks, the lyrics and visuals are very
far from each other.
• It’s also very similar as she sings ‘Girls like girls like boys do,
nothin' new’ and the relationship is shown very naturally as if it’s
not a big deal.
• There is also a feeling of the boyfriend watching the girl and this is
presented through the lyrics ‘Always gonna steal your thunder,
watch me like a dark cloud On the move collecting numbers, Imma
take your girl out’
• ‘I've been crossing all the lines, all the lines Kissed your girl that
made you cry, boys’ this line links into the idea that there is
competition between boys and lesbians when they are in the ‘same
room’.
• This is shown as the boy in the video is consistently over watching
the two girls and is pandering to his girlfriend. He gets
progressively worse as it goes on which makes the audience dislike
him.
Music and the Visual
• For this the artist is never shown and therefore it is purely narrative
based. There is not much of a relationship since it doesn’t establish Hayley
Kiyoko as the singer.
• The music is very relaxed and chilled out and this links in with the visuals
as it has a very calm vibe to it. The only time this is broken is near the end
where the boy interrupts and causes a scene. This symbolises the boy
character as being in the way of their relationship and stopping the entire
thing.
Demands of the Label
• Hayley Kiyoko is an independent artist and therefore does not have
demands of any label, she is free to do what she wants. This could be
reason to why the video is fairly different to the norm as it openly shows a
gay couple. This is used in other music videos however it is not usually the
main focus of the video and is instead only teased, this is the idea of artists
being accepting of LGBT but not being too controversial. Whereas Hayley
has the freedom to speak and say whatever she wants too because she
does not have too much of an image to uphold or label to conform too.
Emphasis of Looking
• In one scene of the music video there is an emphasis of sexualisation of
the girls bodies however it’s not shown in a provocative way and in more
of the desire of the other girl. This is used to further their relationship and
to show that she has interest in the other girl. Otherwise there isn’t much
emphasis on the female body and there is only emphasis when it is trying
to show the girls desire for the other girl. Like pop music there isn’t much
sexualisation as they are trying to put across an important message and
not actually show off the women.
Intertextual references
• This video obviously references to the fight for equality with LGBT in
society. The idea of lesbians is usually under represented and in history
has not been as big as an issue as gay men. The stereotypes of a lesbian
relationship is totally disbanded In the video by showing both girls as
normal and in love other than being ‘butch’ or as it being out of the norm.
The entire message of the video is that girls liking girls is nothing new and
people should get over it. Again this is usually done in a lot of indie or
unpopular artists videos as if it was done in popular artists videos their
image may get tarnished and they’ll be seen as controversial. Popular
artists tend to avoid the controversy and stay out of important issues
inside the media & world.
Carly Rae Jepsen - I Really Like You
• "I Really Like You" is a song by Carly
Rae Jepsen for her third studio
album, Emotion (2015). It was written
by Jepsen, J Kash and Peter Svensson,
and produced by the latter. The song
was released as the album's lead
single on March 2, 2015. The video was
released on March 6, 2015. It features
Tom Hanks and Justin Bieber, this is due
to their labels and allows them to
perform in the video.
Genre & Characteristics
• Carly Rae Jepsen is primarily a pop
artist, she came to fame when she sang
with Owl City but after that she faded
from the spotlight. I really like you is a
hit single and is quite popular. The
video is upbeat and happy such as the
song and genre. It features Tom Hanks
lip syncing with other guests stars like
Justin Bieber and two famous viners. In
pop music it’s easy for artists to feature
other celebrities on the same label in
their products.
• As Jepsen said the video is very
comedic and unexpected which links in
with the pop feel of simplicity and fun.
Tom Hanks features as the main lead due to a series of events..
“It turns out that Hanks is friendly with Jepsen's manager, Scooter Braun. One
night over dinner, Braun shared Jepsen's concept for the clip with Hanks.
"He was telling him how I had this vision for like a male lead, that I wanted to
have this guy sing the song rather than me, and I thought it would be really
comedic and funny, especially if it was someone totally unexpected," Jepson
told ABC News. "And Tom was like, 'Well, why don’t you guys ever ask me?'
"So I got a call from Scooter three days before Christmas, like, 'What about Tom
Hanks?' I’m like, 'Are you kidding me? That’s Christmas come early! So, yes,
please!'" she added.” – Article
Scooter Braun is also Justin Biebers manager and this could be why he features
in the video as well.
Lyrics and the Visuals
• As shown in the interviews the lyrics and visuals will not match up
because the video was created entirely for comedic effect instead of telling
a story or spreading a message.
• This goes against Chris Andersons theory as this video is totally random
and unexpected which is what Carly was aiming for. Due to this it gained
popularity as it’s so fun and Tom Hanks is a very favoured actor.
Music and the Visual
• As said before, this is an entirely random video. The music and visuals
kind of match up as it’s upbeat and happy and the video is comedic and
happy and therefore it creates the feeling of pop.
Demands of the Label
• Clearly the label played a big part and
in the end Carly was shown. This is due
to them wanting people to know she is
the singer. Other demands would be
showing the other celebrities as agreed
and trying to fit them in. Carly doesn’t
have much of a reputation however she
has the innocent vibe to her due to the
fact she is a young pop artist and has
not done too many controversial things
therefore she will be shown as fun and
innocent instead of hardcore. Such as
Ariana Grande who went from innocent
pop cute idol artist to more mature
stuff such as Popular with
Mika,Problem with Iggy Azalea and
Break Free with Zedd.
Emphasis of Looking
• There is no emphasis of looking as it focuses on Tom Hanks and they are
trying to show Carly Rae Jepsen as innocent. However she is still shown at
the end as the artist and halfway through this creates an emphasis of
recognising her as the singer as she faded from the spotlight it’s clearly
her label trying to get her back into popularity.
Intertextual references
• Tom Hanks was the main lead
in the film Forrest Gump, a
reference is made to this when
he signs the ping pong paddle
• Also two famous Viners; King
Bach and Randy Mancusso
appear and this references
modern pop culture.
Birdy - Wings
• "Wings" is a single by English
musician Birdy. The song was
released as a digital download on 29
July 2013 and in the United Kingdom
on 8 September 2013 as the lead
single from her second studio
album, Fire Within (2013). A music
video to accompany the release of
"Wings" was first released onto
YouTube on 2 August 2013. The video
shows Birdy with guests at a mansion
party, complete with masks, fencing
and horses. It was directed by Sophie
Muller.
Genre & Characteristics
• Birdy is a indie artist and
therefore will not have a music
video that specifically links to the
song. It has a very laid back free
feeling which in the norm for
many indie artists and videos
such as Pumped up Kicks. It’s
fairly slow paced and chilled out
and focuses on birdy with actions
around her. The theme of reckless
rich people links in with the indie
ideas of not following the norms.
Showing people and the artist
having a good time is also quite
popular for the indie crowd.
Instead of being bright and loud the video is very
artistic and clearly very thought out when it was
shot, this is very common with indie music as they
have a passion for what they were creating.
Lyrics and the Visuals
• The lyrics speak about someone she loves not being with her again. It
recounts the tale of a happy and fun night with someone she loves then
leaving again. This is represented in the video as it shows people having a
fun night – however the person in question is never shown it’s only shown
that she and other people are having a fun night. This distracts from the
lyrics and at first listen it doesn’t seem to be about a boy and more about
the night they had.
Music and the Visual
• As the music speeds up so do the visuals, especially nearing the chorus
where many shots are cut up to show a sort of flashback in time with the
speeding up music.
• The entire song & video are quite relaxed and simple this make it look
more fun what they’re doing as we can only hear the quiet music in
contrast to the fun events.
Demands of the Label
• Birdy is signed to Warner. This means she will be a focus as it’s a big label,
due to her rise in fame with her cover of skinny love she is well
established. Through the video she is shown as singing and with a fair
amount of close ups.
Emphasis of Looking
• With indie music there is never really an emphasis of looking and instead
an emphasis on telling a story. The whole genre don’t focus on how people
look like mainstream music but instead on the sound.
Intertextual references
• There isn’t much intertextual reference due to the fact indie artists don’t
like doing that sort of thing. However it does reference masquerade and
activities enjoyed by the upper classes.
Imagine Dragons – It’s Time
• "It's Time" is a song written and
performed by American alternative
rock band Imagine Dragons. The song
is an indie rock song, and its lyrics
describe the narrator's resistance to
change in the face of great turmoil.
The art design is vaguely reminiscent
of that of a wasteland or apocolypse.
The music video was produced by
Todd Makurath and directed by
Anthony Leonardi III.
Genre & Characteristics
• Due to the fact they are indie rock they
can break from the norm and do
whatever they want basically, Imagine
dragons went for an apocalyptic feel
which is common in their work. It’s
very dark and grungy however it is
spreading a positive message about
being whoever you want, this is similar
to Why Worry? By Set it off as it’s a
grungy theme but a positive message.
• Similar to Why Worry? The entire
band is shown which is popular with
the rock genre as they are more about
eachother and united instead of just
having a main singer.
Lyrics and the Visuals
• There isn’t much correspondence with the lyrics and visuals. They were
clearly given artistic freedom and went in a different direction. The
message from the lyrics is about not changing and progressing as you are
• The lead singer wrote this at a low point of his life – when he dropped out
of college therefore ‘Don't look back Turn in the rags and giving the
commodities a rain check’ could refer to the idea of him telling himself to
move on with his life and try and make it better. A lot of alternative rock
artist generally write songs about their life and their problems &
overcoming them, therefore they’re trying to spread the message out to
their fans which a lot of alternative rock bands care about. It’s more about
the message than the video.
Music and the Visual
• The music is very similar to the visuals as rock generally goes with
apocalyptic due to the fact it’s very hard-core idea and rock is a very
strong genre of music. The cuts and editing pace is slow which goes along
with the music as it’s quite a slow song even as it speeds up. The build up
with the music also shows in the visuals at the end with the smoke
explosion.
Demands of the Label
• Imagine Dragons are signed to Interscope which feature artists such
as Eminem, Madonna,U2, and Lady Gaga. A common theme seems to be
this label allows artists freedom in what they want (such as Madonna and
Lady Gaga have very different styles). They will clearly want all the
members in the video but otherwise they go with their own theme.
Emphasis of Looking
• Since they are a band full of boys there isn’t much emphasis of looking.
They focus more on how cool they look instead of how hot they look. Since
they are trying to spread a message like the other music videos it will be
focused on that instead.
Intertextual references
• Some have said the video is reminiscent of Lord of The Rings. However
there is no intertextual references other than to the fantasy genre of films.

Looking at one genre and going against convention by using attributes from other genres can lead to an interesting music video.
  • 4. Sara Bareilles - Brave • "Brave" is a song by American singer- songwriter Sara Bareilles, taken from her fourth studio album, The Blessed Unrest (2013). The song was written by Bareilles and Jack Antonoff from the band fun. She was inspired from the struggles that a close friend dealt with in regard to coming out. Bareilles requested Mark Endert to produce it with the explicit goal of radio airplay. "Brave" was released worldwide through digital download on April 23, 2013 as the lead single from the album, through Epic Records.
  • 5. Genre & Characteristics • Much like Taylor Swifts video Shake it off this is a Pop genre and will have similar characteristics. The music is very upbeat and it’s a very uplifting message being spread. Since the motivation is about her friend the video will be very positive. It’s shot in a mix of handheld cameras and the use of tripods. The handheld cameras creates a feeling of naturalness and like they are being watched/filmed as they dance. The singer is also the main focus of the music video and the rest of the actors are secondary characters.
  • 6. Genre & Characteristics • Unlike usual pop videos this music video is performance based and it focuses on being embarrassing and sort of pranking the people around them but having a fun time, very much like Taylor Swifts –Shake it Off it’s about being yourself and not caring what others think.
  • 7. Lyrics and the Visuals • The video is done in a one man flash mob type of style, it depicts people dancing in open places and by the end of the video it’s revealed they’re dancing to no music. This emphasises the idea of being brave. • The motivation is from her friend who had trouble with coming out, whilst the lyrics don’t directly link with sexuality the notion of bravery and being yourself this is mostly shown through the chorus – ‘Say what you wanna say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave With what you want to say And let the words fall out Honestly I wanna see you be brave’
  • 8. Music and the Visual • The music is very up-beat and pop stylish this corresponds to the dancing and up-beat happy feeling from the visuals. It’s very similar to Shake it off by Taylor swift, this is usual with the pop genre as a lot of videos end up being similar. • It’s disputed that Katy Perry stole the music for her song Roar, both artists have agreed that didn’t happen however this shows how the pop genre is so similar and it makes it difficult to differentiate.
  • 9. Demands of the Label • There isn’t much of a narrative and instead it focuses on a point of view shot where the audience is watching. Of course Sara is going to have a very clean and happy image due to being a pop star such as Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. Close ups as well establish Sara as the singer and the most important
  • 10. Emphasis of Looking • Sara is constantly shown as the singer and this draws attention to her more than the other actors/dancers. However, this isn’t sexualised as a lot of women are, since it’s spreading a positive message it has close ups to give the feeling that she is actually interacting with the audience.
  • 11. Intertextual references • Much of the song has to do with coming out of the closet. She refers to the millions of gay rights activists, including those openly gay, who have used their homosexuality as a tool to combat against the opposition. This isn’t particularly shown in the video as it’s more of a supporting video towards her friend and anyone else. The generalisation of it means it can be applied to any type of situation that someone needs to be brave in this reaches to a wider audience and does not focus too much on LGBT. • Otherwise there are no other references to the outer world than the video.
  • 12. Hayley Kiyoko – Girls Like Girls • Hayley Kiyoko is an independent artist who rose to fame through Disney films and due to her parents already being quite famous. The EP was recorded in her parent's garage in Los Angeles with British producer James Flannigan. Kiyoko also collaborated with Swedish producer Anders Grahn. The music video for her song "Girls Like Girls" was released on June 24th, 2015. She and Austin Winchell both directed the video. The actors she used all starred in films with her previously and therefore it is a very personal project.
  • 13. Genre & Characteristics • The genre of the music is electropop due to the instruments being artificially created using synthesisers. However the actual video has more of a niche feel to it and much more indie. This is due to the fact it openly shows two girls in a relationship, a lot of indie and unpopular artist do this and it is sometimes shown in recent songs by popular artist but it’s not focused on the two girls, an example of this is Charlie Puth & Meghan Trainor – Marvin Gaye this is because they do show same sex relationships but it is primarily heterosexual. This type of video focuses on a same sex relationship and portrays it in a very natural way. It is very narrative based and does not feature the artist at all, it focuses on the two girl actresses and male actor. • The story is very well told and the relationship is built for the audience to support the girl character and they hold a lot of chemistry together. • It is also shot with a orange/red tone over it to give a very warm and nostalgic feel to it – this is always used in indie types of music.
  • 14. Lyrics and the Visuals • The lyrics and visuals closely match up due to it being what the entire song is about. This goes against the indie stereotype as a lot of indie songs don’t actually show and sing about what's going on – an example being Pumped up Kicks, the lyrics and visuals are very far from each other. • It’s also very similar as she sings ‘Girls like girls like boys do, nothin' new’ and the relationship is shown very naturally as if it’s not a big deal. • There is also a feeling of the boyfriend watching the girl and this is presented through the lyrics ‘Always gonna steal your thunder, watch me like a dark cloud On the move collecting numbers, Imma take your girl out’ • ‘I've been crossing all the lines, all the lines Kissed your girl that made you cry, boys’ this line links into the idea that there is competition between boys and lesbians when they are in the ‘same room’. • This is shown as the boy in the video is consistently over watching the two girls and is pandering to his girlfriend. He gets progressively worse as it goes on which makes the audience dislike him.
  • 15. Music and the Visual • For this the artist is never shown and therefore it is purely narrative based. There is not much of a relationship since it doesn’t establish Hayley Kiyoko as the singer. • The music is very relaxed and chilled out and this links in with the visuals as it has a very calm vibe to it. The only time this is broken is near the end where the boy interrupts and causes a scene. This symbolises the boy character as being in the way of their relationship and stopping the entire thing.
  • 16. Demands of the Label • Hayley Kiyoko is an independent artist and therefore does not have demands of any label, she is free to do what she wants. This could be reason to why the video is fairly different to the norm as it openly shows a gay couple. This is used in other music videos however it is not usually the main focus of the video and is instead only teased, this is the idea of artists being accepting of LGBT but not being too controversial. Whereas Hayley has the freedom to speak and say whatever she wants too because she does not have too much of an image to uphold or label to conform too.
  • 17. Emphasis of Looking • In one scene of the music video there is an emphasis of sexualisation of the girls bodies however it’s not shown in a provocative way and in more of the desire of the other girl. This is used to further their relationship and to show that she has interest in the other girl. Otherwise there isn’t much emphasis on the female body and there is only emphasis when it is trying to show the girls desire for the other girl. Like pop music there isn’t much sexualisation as they are trying to put across an important message and not actually show off the women.
  • 18. Intertextual references • This video obviously references to the fight for equality with LGBT in society. The idea of lesbians is usually under represented and in history has not been as big as an issue as gay men. The stereotypes of a lesbian relationship is totally disbanded In the video by showing both girls as normal and in love other than being ‘butch’ or as it being out of the norm. The entire message of the video is that girls liking girls is nothing new and people should get over it. Again this is usually done in a lot of indie or unpopular artists videos as if it was done in popular artists videos their image may get tarnished and they’ll be seen as controversial. Popular artists tend to avoid the controversy and stay out of important issues inside the media & world.
  • 19. Carly Rae Jepsen - I Really Like You • "I Really Like You" is a song by Carly Rae Jepsen for her third studio album, Emotion (2015). It was written by Jepsen, J Kash and Peter Svensson, and produced by the latter. The song was released as the album's lead single on March 2, 2015. The video was released on March 6, 2015. It features Tom Hanks and Justin Bieber, this is due to their labels and allows them to perform in the video.
  • 20. Genre & Characteristics • Carly Rae Jepsen is primarily a pop artist, she came to fame when she sang with Owl City but after that she faded from the spotlight. I really like you is a hit single and is quite popular. The video is upbeat and happy such as the song and genre. It features Tom Hanks lip syncing with other guests stars like Justin Bieber and two famous viners. In pop music it’s easy for artists to feature other celebrities on the same label in their products. • As Jepsen said the video is very comedic and unexpected which links in with the pop feel of simplicity and fun. Tom Hanks features as the main lead due to a series of events.. “It turns out that Hanks is friendly with Jepsen's manager, Scooter Braun. One night over dinner, Braun shared Jepsen's concept for the clip with Hanks. "He was telling him how I had this vision for like a male lead, that I wanted to have this guy sing the song rather than me, and I thought it would be really comedic and funny, especially if it was someone totally unexpected," Jepson told ABC News. "And Tom was like, 'Well, why don’t you guys ever ask me?' "So I got a call from Scooter three days before Christmas, like, 'What about Tom Hanks?' I’m like, 'Are you kidding me? That’s Christmas come early! So, yes, please!'" she added.” – Article Scooter Braun is also Justin Biebers manager and this could be why he features in the video as well.
  • 21. Lyrics and the Visuals • As shown in the interviews the lyrics and visuals will not match up because the video was created entirely for comedic effect instead of telling a story or spreading a message. • This goes against Chris Andersons theory as this video is totally random and unexpected which is what Carly was aiming for. Due to this it gained popularity as it’s so fun and Tom Hanks is a very favoured actor.
  • 22. Music and the Visual • As said before, this is an entirely random video. The music and visuals kind of match up as it’s upbeat and happy and the video is comedic and happy and therefore it creates the feeling of pop.
  • 23. Demands of the Label • Clearly the label played a big part and in the end Carly was shown. This is due to them wanting people to know she is the singer. Other demands would be showing the other celebrities as agreed and trying to fit them in. Carly doesn’t have much of a reputation however she has the innocent vibe to her due to the fact she is a young pop artist and has not done too many controversial things therefore she will be shown as fun and innocent instead of hardcore. Such as Ariana Grande who went from innocent pop cute idol artist to more mature stuff such as Popular with Mika,Problem with Iggy Azalea and Break Free with Zedd.
  • 24. Emphasis of Looking • There is no emphasis of looking as it focuses on Tom Hanks and they are trying to show Carly Rae Jepsen as innocent. However she is still shown at the end as the artist and halfway through this creates an emphasis of recognising her as the singer as she faded from the spotlight it’s clearly her label trying to get her back into popularity.
  • 25. Intertextual references • Tom Hanks was the main lead in the film Forrest Gump, a reference is made to this when he signs the ping pong paddle • Also two famous Viners; King Bach and Randy Mancusso appear and this references modern pop culture.
  • 26. Birdy - Wings • "Wings" is a single by English musician Birdy. The song was released as a digital download on 29 July 2013 and in the United Kingdom on 8 September 2013 as the lead single from her second studio album, Fire Within (2013). A music video to accompany the release of "Wings" was first released onto YouTube on 2 August 2013. The video shows Birdy with guests at a mansion party, complete with masks, fencing and horses. It was directed by Sophie Muller.
  • 27. Genre & Characteristics • Birdy is a indie artist and therefore will not have a music video that specifically links to the song. It has a very laid back free feeling which in the norm for many indie artists and videos such as Pumped up Kicks. It’s fairly slow paced and chilled out and focuses on birdy with actions around her. The theme of reckless rich people links in with the indie ideas of not following the norms. Showing people and the artist having a good time is also quite popular for the indie crowd. Instead of being bright and loud the video is very artistic and clearly very thought out when it was shot, this is very common with indie music as they have a passion for what they were creating.
  • 28. Lyrics and the Visuals • The lyrics speak about someone she loves not being with her again. It recounts the tale of a happy and fun night with someone she loves then leaving again. This is represented in the video as it shows people having a fun night – however the person in question is never shown it’s only shown that she and other people are having a fun night. This distracts from the lyrics and at first listen it doesn’t seem to be about a boy and more about the night they had.
  • 29. Music and the Visual • As the music speeds up so do the visuals, especially nearing the chorus where many shots are cut up to show a sort of flashback in time with the speeding up music. • The entire song & video are quite relaxed and simple this make it look more fun what they’re doing as we can only hear the quiet music in contrast to the fun events.
  • 30. Demands of the Label • Birdy is signed to Warner. This means she will be a focus as it’s a big label, due to her rise in fame with her cover of skinny love she is well established. Through the video she is shown as singing and with a fair amount of close ups.
  • 31. Emphasis of Looking • With indie music there is never really an emphasis of looking and instead an emphasis on telling a story. The whole genre don’t focus on how people look like mainstream music but instead on the sound.
  • 32. Intertextual references • There isn’t much intertextual reference due to the fact indie artists don’t like doing that sort of thing. However it does reference masquerade and activities enjoyed by the upper classes.
  • 33. Imagine Dragons – It’s Time • "It's Time" is a song written and performed by American alternative rock band Imagine Dragons. The song is an indie rock song, and its lyrics describe the narrator's resistance to change in the face of great turmoil. The art design is vaguely reminiscent of that of a wasteland or apocolypse. The music video was produced by Todd Makurath and directed by Anthony Leonardi III.
  • 34. Genre & Characteristics • Due to the fact they are indie rock they can break from the norm and do whatever they want basically, Imagine dragons went for an apocalyptic feel which is common in their work. It’s very dark and grungy however it is spreading a positive message about being whoever you want, this is similar to Why Worry? By Set it off as it’s a grungy theme but a positive message. • Similar to Why Worry? The entire band is shown which is popular with the rock genre as they are more about eachother and united instead of just having a main singer.
  • 35. Lyrics and the Visuals • There isn’t much correspondence with the lyrics and visuals. They were clearly given artistic freedom and went in a different direction. The message from the lyrics is about not changing and progressing as you are • The lead singer wrote this at a low point of his life – when he dropped out of college therefore ‘Don't look back Turn in the rags and giving the commodities a rain check’ could refer to the idea of him telling himself to move on with his life and try and make it better. A lot of alternative rock artist generally write songs about their life and their problems & overcoming them, therefore they’re trying to spread the message out to their fans which a lot of alternative rock bands care about. It’s more about the message than the video.
  • 36. Music and the Visual • The music is very similar to the visuals as rock generally goes with apocalyptic due to the fact it’s very hard-core idea and rock is a very strong genre of music. The cuts and editing pace is slow which goes along with the music as it’s quite a slow song even as it speeds up. The build up with the music also shows in the visuals at the end with the smoke explosion.
  • 37. Demands of the Label • Imagine Dragons are signed to Interscope which feature artists such as Eminem, Madonna,U2, and Lady Gaga. A common theme seems to be this label allows artists freedom in what they want (such as Madonna and Lady Gaga have very different styles). They will clearly want all the members in the video but otherwise they go with their own theme.
  • 38. Emphasis of Looking • Since they are a band full of boys there isn’t much emphasis of looking. They focus more on how cool they look instead of how hot they look. Since they are trying to spread a message like the other music videos it will be focused on that instead.
  • 39. Intertextual references • Some have said the video is reminiscent of Lord of The Rings. However there is no intertextual references other than to the fantasy genre of films.
