    • He is called the “ Father of our country .”
    • He was born in Virginia .
    • Before he was president, George Washington was a farmer and a leader of soldiers .

    • Abraham Lincoln was the 16 th president of the United States.
    • His nickname was “ Honest Abe .”
    • He was born in a log cabin .
    • Although very poor, he taught himself to read and became a lawyer before being president.

    • Pocahontas was an American Indian girl who was a helper and a friend to the settlers in Jamestown .
  • 6. Betsy Ross
    • Betsy Ross is believed to have sewn the first flag for our country.
  • 7. Martin Luther King, Jr.
    • Martin Luther King, Jr. was an African American citizen who worked for the fairness of all people .
    • There is a holiday in February to celebrate and remember how Martin Luther King, Jr. worked so that all people would be treated fairly.

    • Benjamin Franklin proved that electricity was in lightning.
    • He started the first library and the first volunteer fire department .
