Helen Burrey Helen Burrey was an army nurse during World War 1. She was one of the first nurses sent to France. Helen was born in Pittsburg in 1892; and of Irish decent. She eight brothers an sisters and only 2 survived into adulthood.
She was 22 when she went to war. She worked in army base hospital No. 27 and was famous for the extremely graphic and factual entries in her journal. Helen described the filthy conditions of the trains and horrible conditions of the patients of war. She did everything from amputations, to just bandaging.
