- 1. I wanted to start my talk off with a question.2. Who here loves food?, or considers themselves as a foodie?3. Okay okay a couple of hands in the air…
- 1. For me? Yeah I consider myself as a foodie. 2. But that does that mean I love all food? No… not at all. 3.On the contrary, I am probably one of the pickiest eaters you’ll ever meet.
- 1. As a picky eater, I analyze food, they have to have the right smell, taste and look2. So as picky eater, I feel like I can show you a new perspective on food that you’ve never even thought about.3. How will I do this? Well… let me tell you all a little story.
- 1. I was born in India. And as you all may know, india is not the cleanest place in the world. 2. My parents would always boil the food that I ate, but I still got sick3. Heck! They triple boiled everything that they fed me but I still got sick.
- 1. So they did what any logical parent would do.2. They brought me to the doctor. 3. And the results… Well, I now live in Canada4. So from my roots. I was born to be a picky eater.
- 1. And from that experience, a story emerged, my life.2. Although I’ll never know how its like to live India3. I’m extremely grateful for my parents moving to Canada.4. I mean we have great people, great food, and we can create great stories.
- 1. Living in Canada, I’ve shared a lot of experiences with a lot of different people.2. For the best people of my life I’ve shared experiences over food.3. Think back to your first date. Where did you bring them?4. Probably a restaurant of some sort right?
- 1. Serving food that looks kinda like this. 2.And now think, if you weren’t eating this delicious food, where would you be?3. If that were me, I’d probably be at home eating potato chips and watching Netflix.4. But that's a different story.
- 1.Story, food creates stories. 2. Growing up, my family and I didn't have much money.3.Food has been a huge part of my life whether it was just getting it, 4. or it was the inspiration that it brought
- 1. A few years ago, my father opened up a restaurant.2. It soon became a tremendously popular joint for Indians in the Mississauga region.3. My father taught me to have a passion for what you cook, and that each dish had a story behind it.
- 1.The story behind my dad’s recipes? Well, in India, my dad had an older brother.2. His brother was an amazing chef and ran the family restaurant business.3. But, after a freak motorcycle accident. Well, lets just say my father ran it from then on.
- 1. From my father’s story, I gained inspiration to create my own.2. Lately I’ve been looking to create my own restaurant with my own recipes.3. But that's just a venture at the moment, first I got to get through school.
- 1. Through the University of Waterloo I had the amazing opportunity to teach English in Turkey for 4 months. 2. And what did I love most about Turkey? 3. It was definitely the food4. In Turkey, people take so much pride in their food, so there was no need for me to be picky.
- 1. But getting that food was not the easiest thing.2. I lived in Ankara, and in ankara, barely anyone spoke english3. Luckily I was at a university where most students knew a bit of English
- 1. But I remember my first day like it was yesterday.2. That day was the day, I met my best Turkish friend Alperen.3. I was trying to order food at the university’s cafeteria. 4. Nothing looked familiar so I was taking a really long time.
- 1. So, I was bound to annoy some people in line.2.I guess the guy behind me got sick of waiting and helped me pick out something.3. From then on we became the best of friends. 4. We ate lunch together that day and he tried to explain what the food I ordered was
- 1. It was hard to understand what he said but from what I could comprehend. 2. He said that the dish ordered was called sarma3. It was easy to eat, but very difficult to make. 4. And He then explained how much he missed his family back home
- 1. He’s from Antalya, which is about an 8 hour drive from Ankara2. And he came to Ankara because of university.3. It has been a whole year since he saw his parents and what he misses the most is his sister, and his mother’s Sarma.
- 1. He told me a story where every spring, they have a festival where men jumped over fire.2. And every year, before festivities started, he would be in the kitchen for the whole day with his mom making sarma3. But in the end, he said that it was all worth it, because it created great memories, and created a great story.
- 1. Now, to go back to the question do I love food. No… I still don’t love allfoods. 2. But I am inspired by them. 3. Now its your turn, go get inspired and try new foods because you never know what people you’ll meet and what kind of story you’ll create.
