  3. 3. I. Executive Summary Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program will offer the optimal environment to latch key children that are seeking a safe, reliable environment spend their afternoons. As unemployment rates increase parents soon find themselves working multiple jobs in order to maintain their lifestyle. While these parents tend to their jobs, the children are often left home alone and unsupervised. As a result, children begin to experiment with various irresponsible activities. As an attempt to provide the adult with child care services and educate the students, the owner of Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program created a detailed list of activities and services that will be provided to the students. The concept of our environment is to create a organization in which the students will develop responsibility, patience, and critical thinking skills. There are effective strategies that will assure that the company will reach the greatest number of customers. Through various promotional activities and rewards, Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program will optimize their likelihood of gaining the greatest amount of customers.
  4. 4. II. Description and Analysis of the Business Situation A. Rationale and Marketing Research Some 14 million school age children, 25 percent of the total, come home to an empty house or are on their own after school, including 3.5 million kindergarteners, according to figures compiled by the Afterschool Alliance, a broad, nonprofit coalition of organizations and policy makers. The parents of more than 28 million school age children work outside the home, but only 6.5 million K-12 children participate in afterschool programs, making the hours between 3 and 6pm the peak hours for juvenile crimes and experimentation with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and sex. Eventually, the results of these experiments could lead to a decline in Florida‟s graduation rate.
  5. 5. Florida‟s federal graduation rate is 74.5 percent, but that doesn‟t mean that 25.5percent of students are dropouts. These students can be classified as graduates, dropouts, and non-graduates. The non-graduates are those students who have beenretained and are still in school or students who received certificates of completion orGED-based diplomas. In Florida‟s 2011-12 federal graduation rates, 4.9 percent ofthe students were dropouts. Figure 2 illustrates the proportion students of the 2011-12federal who graduated, dropped out, or did not graduate. In fact, according to statistics located at Florida’s Federal High School GraduationRates and Drop-out Rates, 2011-12, the remaining 21.5 million children, who do notparticipate in after school programs may find themselves with an increased risk of notmeeting graduation requirements. Camp Sunshine After School Program is one of themany after school organizations that will help contribute to this cause. CampSunshine after School Program is a child education afterschool program whichprovides latchkey children with a fun, productive environment to spend theirafternoons. Camp Sunshine after School Program provides students with theopportunity to develop various critical thinking skills that will aide them in futuredecision making and healthy communication amongst peers.
  6. 6. B. Introduction Camp Sunshine after School Program is a Limited Liability Company that aims to provide a safe haven to thousands of latch key children, and, inevitably reduce the risk of juvenile crimes and experimentation. Camp Sunshine after School Program will offer a convenient after school program to a wide range of students. Camp Sunshine After School Program„s company will branch off into three major communities within Florida which contain a low graduation rate. These include communities such as Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Boynton Beach. Within our agenda, Camp Sunshine after School Program will implement the use of various educational and character building activities. Camp Sunshine after School Program will provide various extra curriculum and personal education services including sports, clubs, and tutoring for core subjects (math, science, reading, and language).C. Self- Analysis Throughout my high school career I have always been told “Children are tomorrow‟s hope for humanity”; I believe this quote is a very accurate and inspirational quote. Since the beginning of my sophomore year in high school I have devoted my afterschool schedule to helping out the children within my community. During spring of 2011, I volunteered at Boca Raton Middle School‟s after school program where I assisted a wide range of students in developing leadership characteristics. I observed that children are highly influenced by not only their peers but, also their elders.
  7. 7. Through communicating with these middle school students I began to visualize my behavior and actions in order to prevent the children from veering away from education. Upon this discovery, I decided to work with children yet again during the summer of 2011. During the summer, I also volunteered at Palm Beach State College‟s Summer Youth College where I assisted the students participates in various programs relating to their future career. Through my opportunity with these two programs, I have developed ideal characteristics needed while working with children: patience. With my prior experience I aim to develop an after school program of my own that will keep the students off the streets and focused on education.D. Analysis of the Business Opportunity Opportunities lie in all aspects of a student‟s education, including enrichment programs that take place during the afterschool hours and the summer. Afterschool programs are especially well‐placed to help close the opportunity gap that many children and youth from underserved and underrepresented communities face. a. Geographic Camp Sunshine‟s After School Program will focus on extending their networks within Palm Beach County, Florida focusing primary on Delray Beach. Delray Beach lies directly north of Boca Raton, Florida and directly south of Boynton Beach, Florida. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.9 square miles, of which 15.4 square miles is land and .53 square miles is water.
  8. 8. b. DemographicAs of 2000, 18.9% of households had children under the age of 18 livingwith them, 42.4% were married couples living together, 10.2% had afemale householder with no husband present, and 43.7% were non-families. 35.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.3%had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. In 2000 theaverage household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.87.In2000, the citys population was spread out with 18.2% under the age of 18,6.3% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and25.9% who were 65 years of age or older.c. Economic Analysis- The City Commission unanimously voted to establish the Delray Beach Economic Development Fund to support citywide economic opportunities to attract and/or retain jobs as well as to increase the City‟s tax base. This Fund has been set up to serve as the funding mechanism to provide the required financial match to leverage State and County financial incentives for the retention and recruitment of businesses to Delray Beach.
  9. 9. Funding to support citywide economic opportunities through the Economic Development Fund will be provided from the Citys unrestricted General Fund reserves - up to a total of one million dollars ($1,000,000). However, this funding will only be available for distribution to qualified targeted businesses and industries that meet the City‟s economic development goals. E. Proposed Organization- Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program will be a small limited liability partnership. Like all other small business owners, I will need to follow some essential steps to starting your business. This includes getting the proper tax registrations, business and occupational licenses and permits from federal, state and local governments in order to operate legally. As an independent contractor, I will also need to create a standard agreement for my services.III. Proposed Marketing/Promotion Plan A. Proposed Product and Service Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program will provide the following services including sports, clubs, and tutoring for core subjects (math, science, reading, and language). Our sports section will consist of a coach for each of the following sports: Basketball, Football, Track, and Swimming. Students participating in the sports section will be required to pay a yearly membership fee, uniforms, safety clothing, and other materials required per student. Our club section will consist of four main clubs including: Debate, Girls/Boy‟s Scout, Chess Club, and Math Club. ** The final section will consist of tutoring for core subjects.
  10. 10. **The following are examples of clubs that may or may not become active upon construction of building. The final decision on the sports and club subjects depends on popularity and rank.B. Proposed Pricing Policy Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program will charge 32 dollars an hour per child. For each additional child we will charge an additional 20 dollars. The overall expense per child depends on the activity that they have signed up for. There will also be a 25 dollar yearly membership fee charged per activity subscription.C. Personal Promotion Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program’s personal promotion will include word or mouth and the use of salespeople and survey’s. During the first month of our opening we will stay quiet. The main reason we are opening silently is so that we can see how many people are interested in the product. After testing our market with the first batch of customers we will have the customers complete a survey based on what needs to be improved or not within the organization.D. Nonpersonal Promotion Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program’s nonpersonal promotion will include the use of mass media, newspaper, and flyer distribution. After our personal promotion, business flyers will be created and distributed amongst various school related activities. The administration at the school or educational program would then contact the students who they feel need extra curriculum help.
  11. 11. E. Place At Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program, our channel of distribution to the consumer will be direct because we are offering a service. 12. 12. B. Projected Three Year Plan Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program would like to branch out and expand its network to various cities throughout Palm Beach County. There are various ways we can achieve this goal. Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program plans on branching out into a franchising company. We will achieve this goal through investing in the stock market and applying for a loan to construct our next building. Our goal is to build another Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program and locate it in Boynton Beach, Florida. In order to achieve this goal we will need to raise more money, hire more workers, and build a network of businesses that are willing to sponsor my business.C. Capital and Repayment Plan Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program will earn its money through the payment of each activity. Camp Sunshine Afterschool Program will charge a membership fee for each class. This will include the sports program, extra curriculum activities, and tutoring. Our short term borrowings will include loans made out to paying for equipment, electric appliances, and other equipment needed to run the business.
