This presentation shows students from Gary Roosevelt High School demonstrating how to make ice cream. The location is Family Science Night at West Side High School.

Making Ice CreamMaking Ice Cream
The Roosevelt High School Physics class
gave a demonstration on making ice cream
without an ice cream making machine.
Sandwich bags and people power was used
instead.

Milk, vanilla flavor, sugar, (chocolate or
strawberry) syrup was put in a small sandwich
bag. This small sandwich bag was placed in a
larger sandwich bag that contained ice and
salt.

The milk, vanilla, sugar, and syrup solution is
shown being poured into a sandwich bag.

The bag of solution within another bag of solution is
spun around by hand (the students above put both
bags in plastic containers to help with the spinning
process). The saltwater solution draws heat
energy from the milk solution it has come in contact
with. The milk solution, now with less heat, freezes
within minutes.

Another example of how heat energy is
usually the product of an energy
transformation. Heat from the milk solution
bag was drawn out to help supply heat energy
to the saltwater solution bag.
