Feeling & Behavior• Methamphetamine can be taken through smoking,injection, intranasally or taken orally• It is a white, odorless and bitter powder that dissolvesin water• Immediate effects after smoking or “shooting up”include a sensation called a “rush” which is only felt fora couple minutes. After the rush there is often highagitation• When snorting or swallowing, there is a feeling ofeuphoria, but not a rush• Short term effects include alertness, anxiety andirritability
Body & Brain• Methamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant• Increases the release of dopamine, but blocks thereuptake inhibitors• The quick ability to discharge dopamine rewards thepleasure centers of the brain• Even in small dosages, symptoms after using mayinclude decreased appetite, increased respiration,irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure and a rapidheart rate• Meth can cause aggression and may lead to violent orrisky behaviors
