These deformities can be genetically passed down from mother to baby or can be caused during pregnancy. There are some impacts that effect children with a congenital deformity such as motor and language development. Also it impacts them internally such as low self esteem and social interactions. Because this family is new to Toronto they are unfamiliar with local businesses and services they will need to get started in Toronto such as local grocery stores, malls, parks, schools, emergency services, etc. Faheen’s family will need to have access to hospital and medical services because of her special need. Also they will need to contact and find a new family doctor who can become familiarized with Faheen’s medical history. Other services they Faheen’s family might be interested in are a physical therapist to help Faheen with her prosthesis and also a recreation centre might help as well. The recreation centre can help the family socialize within the community and also help with Faheen making friends outside of her child care centre.

Meeting the Needs of Children & Families
Case Study Assignment
Kayla Clyke
Case Study
“Faheen is a 5 year-old girl who was born with a congenitally deformed right leg. She has had several operations and wears prosthesis. Her father has been transferred to Toronto from Thunder Bay and asks you (the lead teacher in the preschool room) about services in Toronto. He is concerned about Faheen making friends in the room due to her frequent absences due to hospitalization.”
What is it?
Faheen’s special need is known as a “Congenital Disorder”.
This disorder causes an obvious physical abnormality or malformation.
What I think the Family might need?
Access to Medical Services (doctor, hospital)
Recreation Centers
School
Emergency Services (police, fire station etc.)
Grocery Stores
Malls
In Faheen’s Child Care Centre…
Physical Changes : I would have a stool or small chair for Faheen to bring into the different curriculum areas in the room. Also adjust the tables so it is easy for Faheen to move around
Curriculum Changes: I would incorporate more physical activities into the lesson plans, such as dancing, outdoor play, daily exercise in group time etc. This would help Faheen with he disability and incorporate the other s so she doesn’t feel isolated.
