    • Topic: History (End of Crusades) EQ: What happened when the crusades ended?
    • In 1192, two leaders signed a treaty • Richard I and Salah al-Din had weak armies • Muslims were allowed to keep some cities near Palestine • Christians were allowed in Jerusalem • More crusades occurred! (1212) • Children’s Crusade led by peasant children!
    • What is the Reconquista? •Crusaders warred against Muslims in N. Africa and Europe! •Reconquista =battle for control of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain/Portugal) •Reconquest
    • The Umayyad Dynasty was established in Spain! • This means that many Muslims lived , worked, and flourished here • Muslims gradually gave up more and more land to Christians • Muslims and Jews in Spain ruled by Christians • POWER STRUGGLE!
    • In the 1400s, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella wanted to unite Spain as Catholic: • Used the Inquisition (church court) against Muslims and Jews who converted to Christianity • VERY HARSH • Judges (inquisitors) tortured people to find out info • 1000s of people burned at stake
    • Part 2: The Mongol Invasion • After the crusades, Muslim lands changed too! • The Mongols were a nomadic group from north China • Began to attack central Asia and head west under leader Genghis Khan • Killed Muslims, took as slaves
    • Mongols defeated Seljuk Turks, created an Empire, but crumbled • Fought Malmuk Muslims (Turkish) • They converted to Islam • Decided to make Persian the language of government • Empire got so large, it weakened
