Let’s Consider Corporate Social Responsibility Three things of Importance!  What exactly is CSR?  Why should we bother with CSR?  How do we do CSR? It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

Part 1 What is CSR?

Definitions: No agreed definition World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Defines CSR as: ……..“The commitment business has to sustainable economic development, working with employees, their families, the local community and society at large to improve the quality of life”. It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

Wikipedia Defines CSR as  It’s a concept whereby organisations consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, communities and other stakeholders as well as the environment.  This obligation is seen to extend beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legislation and sees the organisation voluntarily taking steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as the local community and society at large. It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

CSR Needs to Include Passion  CSR is about Working more with this……  then engaging this…….. It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

The Body Corporate – are you healthy? Where is your immune system? It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

CSR is all about Values Consider these comments It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

Do You Think These Statements are True? 1. One of the most serious mistakes any business leader can make is to think that values are disconnected from the bottom line. 2. The second is to think that adopting “good practice” will save you from a severe roasting 3. Direct benefits from strong values may be hard to see on the balance sheet; neglect in this area can wipe out your balance sheet altogether. It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

Do You Think These Statements are True? • Strong ethics keep corporations healthy. Weak ethics make companies sick. but it’s a huge risk. • Many companies are more serious about their “numbers” than their “values”. But values are the immune system of every organisation. You can lose 10% of your top team and 60% of your real talent – and it can happen almost overnight  Customers are affected. What ground are we standing on?  75% - Believe their boss does not value the skills gained from volunteer work  90% - Are looking for a higher purpose at work  59% - Haven’t found a meaningful purpose in work  25% - Worry about the ethics of their company  50% - Are trying to leave their jobs (and will be again after this recession)  90% - Believe their older managers don’t understand them UK Survey 2007 It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

Where then is Solid Ground?  Return to True Values  Know why we are ‘Really’ in Business  Profit is the Natural Reward for doing thing well 0 2 It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

Business Can Have a Noble Purpose  To deliver on promises to provide goods and services that build a better, safer, happier world: – For our Customers! Suppliers! Employees and Contractors! Local Communities, and Poorer Nations. – For those with Malaria, for trafficked women, for the Garment factory workers of Asia, for the Farmers and Miners of China.  Your reward for doing this well is your profit, the oxygen you breath not the purpose it exists. It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

Part 3 What is the Way Forward?

So What’s the Proposal?  STOP - just stop another 30 seconds (doing what we have always done)  START – Thinking about how we will prepare for people and their needs in the future – Buildings and workplaces – Health and safety and wellbeing – Developing a CSR program  CONTINUE – to be Values Driven We need to CONTINUE to ‘TURN THE COIN’ It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

Keep Turning the Coin  This World is Upside Down  The Golden Rule is: – ‘Build A Better World’ for All stakeholders and treat them all as you would want to be treated yourself  Increased profits await those who dare to try to ‘Build A Better World’. It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

How do we TURN THE COIN? – SERVE !!  Leaders who support and serve their Managers  Managers who do the same for ALL stakeholders  Keep the Customer at the top of your priorities  Mix in a good serving of: Honesty, Integrity, Trust, Openness, Transparency.  Build a Values Driven Culture: (Dependent, Independent or Inter-dependent?) It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

Remember Management must give way to LEADERSHIP It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!

Why Bother - Her Story - Srey Aged 6  Srey, 6 years old has already has undergone trauma that is almost unspeakable. She was sold to a brothel by her parents when she was 5. It is not known how much her family got for Srey, but other girls talk of being sold for $100; one was sold for $10.  Before she was rescued, Srey endured months of abuse at the hands of pimps and sex tourists. Passed from man to man often drugged to make her compliant Srey was a commodity at the heart of a massive, multimillion dollar sex industry in Phnom Penh. It’s not just about survival, it’s about success!
