This 18 slide power point about clouds, storms and the Bible is based on Job 37:3-13 and Luke 12:54-55. Scripture slides alternate with science information with plenty of pictures to illustrate storms, types of clouds and precipitation and how we use clouds to forecast the weather as they did in Jesus day. Four review slides complete the lesson.
Aligns with VA SOL's 3.9 and 4.6.

  • 1. Clouds, storms and the Bible Scripture from Job 37: 3-13 and Luke 12:54-55 VA SOL’s 3.4, 4.6
  • 2. Job 37: 3-4 He unleashes his lightning beneath the whole heaven        and sends it to the ends of the earth.  After that comes the sound of his roar;        he thunders with his majestic voice.        When his voice resounds,        he holds nothing back.
  • 3. Lightning and thunder happen at the same time. We see lightning before thunder because light travels faster than sound.
  • 4. God's voice thunders in marvelous ways;        he does great things beyond our understanding. He says to the snow, 'Fall on the earth,'        and to the rain shower, 'Be a mighty downpour.'
  • 5. So that all men he has made may know his work, he stops every man from his labor.   The animals take cover; they remain in their dens.
  • 6. Hibernation Animals find a place to sleep, called a den, and spend the cold months inside. Their body functions slow down so they do not need to eat or drink.
  • 7. The tempest comes out from its chamber, the cold from the driving winds. The breath of God produces ice, and the broad waters become frozen.
  • 8. Precipitation Rain, hail, sleet and snow are all forms of precipitation.
  • 9. He loads the clouds with moisture;        he scatters his lightning through them.
  • 10. Clouds There are several types of clouds and the type of cloud in the sky gives clues about the weather. Cirrus clouds are feathery and mean nice weather
  • 11. Cumulus clouds are fair weather clouds but cumulonimbus clouds are darker storm bringing clouds
  • 12. Stratus clouds Stratus clouds are low flat sheet-like clouds usually close to the earth. They can bring light rain or snow.
  • 13. At his direction they swirl around        over the face of the whole earth to do whatever he commands them. He brings the clouds to punish men, or to water his earth and show his love.
  • 14. Forecasting Forecasting the weather by clouds goes backs thousands of years. Listen to what Jesus said in Luke 12:54-55. He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does. And when the south wind blows, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is.
  • 15. Review 1) Who created lightning, thunder, clouds and the water cycle? 2) 2) Why do we see the lightning before we hear the thunder? 3) What are four types of precipitation? (Answers on next slide)
  • 16. Answers 1) God created all things. 2) Light travels faster than sound. 3) Rain, hail, snow and sleet
  • 17. Review Identify these 4 clouds and the type of weather they bring.
  • 18. Answers Cirrus Cumulus Cumulonimbus Stratus
