  • What’s the point of Twitter? is it all about celebrities and cat pics?If one slide, this. Conversation.For me, convincing, This is why I tweet. If people are discussing my work, I want ot be part of it. For those who not convinced benefit – try to persuade you over the next 8 slides.
  • Title of day is using communications to build influence. Twitter can be used to build influence, but that’s the last in a chain. None of the guarantee building influence, all help.Not how to.
  • First reason people staart to be intrigued is they realise they can learn a lot.Single biggest source of CPD. Learn a lot, Learn first, breaking news. New paper in my field, see first on Twitter.EG of using hashtagCan learn in purely passive manner – ie one way receipt of information. Twitter gets interesting when you start to engage – 2 way flow of information.
  • Sick of reflection (medics). Twitter people generally reflective. Twitter a very reflective tool.Everything you say is Public. Make absolutely sure your meaning is clear. Do this in 140 characters. Sharpen rhetorical skills. Process of crafting tweets can help refine ideas.LCP debate last year, being on Twitter gave me huge insight. First into the pt perspective. Second into the gneralist perspective – what others didn’t understand.My exp from Twitter gave me confidence to write an editorial (uncomissioned) for the BMJ. Without twitter wouldn’t have thoguht to do this. Also, Each point made had been rehearsed and refined on Twitter.
  • Networking and education combined. Education, but also about Bringing together hpm professionals, networking, learning, sharing
  • A lot of twitter is promotion. Either implicit or explicit. The point.Promote yourself as a thinker, key authority, leads to opportunities.If that’s a step too far, use it to promote your work.Why? Get it read by as many people as possible. Breadth of readers eg media, policy makers. Network.Objective level, Altmetrics. Ev for altmetrics. Ev for citations.
  • Increasing body of literature on benefits of so med in clincal research.Being tweeted lots does not correlate with citations.Should be care? Yes. Being highly tweeted is a metric in itself – altmetrics. Also importtnat.
  • Challenge on Twitter can be educational. Blogpost describing how Twitter can allow rapid dissemination, and dissection and discussion of new research. Example – paper with inflammatory headlines published, within 48 hours it had been dissected by scientists all over the world, and findings debunked. Even if not in your field, a lot to learn from the way these experts pulled the paper apart. Enormous global journal club. Transforming scientific debate.
  • Research methods too honest to publish
  • Twitter has been valuable to me for all of the above reasons learning, understnading, refining ideas. Title of day is building influence. Can it be helpful for this?Also there are opportunities I’ve had wouldn’t have otherise.Definite opportunities. But influence – not sure. Probably more likely to be useful in building influence if our stage.
