    Metadata Games - Presentation Transcript

    1. Metadata Games Cutting the Metacrap…
    2. Metacrap?
      • “ People are lazy…Short of breaking fingers or sending out squads of vengeful info-ninjas to add metadata to the average user's files, we're never gonna get there ”
Cory Doctorow – “ Metacrap: Putting the torch to seven straw-men of the meta-utopia “
      • You can’t change the whole internet
      • …but what about your company?
    3. Reality
      • Just people prioritising?
      • And metadata doesn’t come high on their priorities…yet
    4. Motivating with games
      • make it about them
      • make it about the customer/user
      • confound their expectations
      • bribe them
    5. Game 1: Metasnap
      • one person is the searcher
      • rest are authors
      • authors tag content with up to 4 phrases
      • searcher ‘searches’ with up to 4 phrases
      • if they find one and only one card both author & searcher get a prize
      • otherwise move on to next card
    6. Metasnap cards
    7. Metasnap learnings
      • language is messy
        • variants
        • homonyms
        • granularity
      • free text searches = pressure on the searcher
      • could cause problems for automation
    8. Game 2: Metascoop
      • you have some stories and some extra assets
      • chose elements from existing stories with extra assets when needed
      • write the story in the middle
      • check the back of the assets to see if they have a connecting piece of metadata.
      • prize for the best story
    9. Metascoop board
    10. Metascoop learnings
      • reuse can be creative
      • automation driven by metadata could save time
    11. Desired outcome
      • To create authors who
      • know why metadata matters
      • believe it is important for them to do it
      • find it easy
      • remember IA training fondly
