SQMRA: Internal Initiatives  We are meeting all current accreditation standards and requirements for quality and patient safety  We are aggressively planning for new policies and government reporting standards  We have the appropriate data systems to access the data we need to measure quality processes/outcomes  We are planning investments to upgrade our IT systems  We have identified who is responsible for collecting, compiling, analyzing, reporting quality/outcomes data  We are communicating this information to all of our internal audiences (associates, physicians, board, etc.)  We are familiar with the major external quality reporting and ratings systems and their methodologies American College of Healthcare Executives 83

SQMRA: Internal Initiatives  We have a strategy and/or plan for addressing external quality reporting, ratings and rankings systems  We have a system for studying poor/low ratings to determine if they are clinical/quality issues, process issues or reporting issues (e.g. incorrect coding)  We have engaged our medical staff in quality reporting discussions/education/planning  We have created a working group or task force to oversee quality measurements and reporting  We have developed talking points and overall message(s) regarding quality reporting  We regularly share our quality reports with all key stakeholder groups American College of Healthcare Executives 84

SQMRA: Local/Regional Initiatives  We know what P4P (pay-for-performance) and incentive programs are in our market or being planned  We have met with payers in our market to review P4P plans  We know how our competitors rate and how this has changed over time  We know how our competitors use quality data to market themselves directly and indirectly  We know how consumers/physicians/payers view healthcare ratings and the changing trends in our market  We know how they currently use this data in our market American College of Healthcare Executives 86

SQMRA: Local/Regional Initiatives  We have implemented tracking systems to measure how quality reporting impacts our market position (e.g. preference, market share, etc.)  We have a marketing/communications plan for addressing quality, healthcare ratings and patient safety reports  We understand how pricing and cost data is being communicated in our local/regional market and at the state level  We have a comprehensive communications strategy and plan for addressing negative ratings and reports in a timely fashion American College of Healthcare Executives 87

SQMRA: Local/Regional Initiatives  We are communicating quality measures to patients  We have worked with individual service lines to identify service specific quality measures and FAQ’s (frequently asked questions) by consumers/patients.  We have a dedicated section for quality measures on our public Web site  In addition to third-party data, we publish our own quality measures American College of Healthcare Executives 88

SQMRA: State/National Initiatives  We know what quality measures we need to pursue  We have a plan for achieving certain clinical outcomes or other quality measures/ratings  We are voluntarily participating in national reporting initiatives as well as pilot/demonstration projects  We track new state and national legislation on quality measurements that may impact our industry  We are proactive in developing/researching new quality standards or measurements  We are actively promoting our position on this topic at the state/national level and asking others to do the same American College of Healthcare Executives 89

SQMRA: State/National Initiatives  We are actively educating others and/or establishing ourselves as a resource on quality measures that may impact our industry Scoring Guide: A = 3 points, B = 2 points, C = 1 point 100-120 (Leading); 61-99 (In the Game); 40-60 (On the Sidelines) After totaling the scores, review the areas you need or want to focus on and use the assessment tool as a general guide for developing a quality marketing and communications plan. Note this is only one approach to measuring quality readiness and should be used in conjunction with other planning resources to develop the best strategy for your organization.
