Getting started with social media <ul><li>Look at what content you already have that can quickly and easily be loaded onto social media sites </li></ul><ul><ul><li>PowerPoint presentations, photos, videos, podcasts </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>consider a blog for your newsletter, alerts and current awareness </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Once your content is loaded you can start looking at the options for sharing and embedding in other applications </li></ul><ul><ul><li>for example Slideshare presentations in your blog, web page, Facebook page, LinkedIn </li></ul></ul><ul><li>If you are not allowed to do any of this “stuff” on your official web page set up a blog on Blogger or Wordpress, or a start page such as Netvibes.com </li></ul><ul><li>But define your strategy first </li></ul>17/06/10 www.rba.co.uk

Your social media strategy <ul><li>What do you want to achieve? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>make your content and information more easily accessible? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>promote your organisation’s/department’s skills and expertise? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>communicate with your users? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>reach a wider audience? </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Resources – time and people </li></ul><ul><ul><li>how much will it take to set up? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>how much will it take to manage, maintain and monitor? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>training? </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Draw a map of where and how the information is flowing </li></ul><ul><ul><li>for example PowerPoint presentation to Slideshare, which then embeds on your home page, blog posting, Facebook page and automatically announced in Twitter </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>blog RSS feed automatically sent to Twitter, Facebook page, LinkedIn, web page </li></ul></ul>17/06/10 www.rba.co.uk
