  • Strange behavior of students: Is someone at your school making statements about hurting people or doing other things out of the ordinary? Remember, if it seems strange or threatening to you, follow your gut. Many active shooter incidents in the past had some indicators of unusual behavior that had gone unreported.Unfamiliar/out of place people: Is this someone you have never seen at the school before? Are they too old to go to your school? Is it someone you recognize and you know they do not go to your school? Is it someone who does go to your school but it acting strangely? Bulky Clothing: Is the person wearing clothing that looks like something is hidden underneath? Are they wearing odd clothing like a military style uniform? Is their clothing inappropriate for the time of year? Unusual activity: Do you see someone doing something out of the ordinary like locking doors? Is someone carrying multiple bags that appear heavy? Do you see someone concealing small packages in areas of the school?
  • Escape: Get away from the bad guy. Go in the opposite direction. Be aware of escape routes in your school. Doors, windows, hallways and fire exits.Hide: If you cannot get away, find a secure place to hide. Report: Once you’ve got to a secure place to hide or have escaped, call 911 and describe the bad guy(s) to police and tell them what he is doing.Barricade: Once you have found a place to hide, secure the location with any means available. Block the door by tying it shut, placing heavy objects against it or anything else you can find in the room. Turn your cell phone ring tone down and be quiet. Turn out lights, close window blinds. Stay away from windows.Arm: If you are hiding and the bad guy is trying to get into your hiding area, arm yourself with whatever objects you can find in the room. There are many objects in the classroom that can be used as an improvised weapon. Books, chairs, staplers, fire extinguishers and computer screens are just a few examples. Fight: If the bad guy gets through your barricade, attack him aggressively with whatever items you have armed yourself with. Throwing books or other heavy objects will distract the attacker giving you time to close on and disarm them. The more people who attack and throw things, the better your chances are of success.
