  • Union Carbide was under maintenance but the system still contained MIC. Lethal MIC vapors were released but they did not go through the vent gas scrubber. The vent gas scrubber detoxify the
  • Union Carbide used MIC to produce a fertilizer called Carbaryl
  • The body is made up of around 60% water. Inhaling MIC causes a volatile reaction that basically ends up “boiling your insides”. Thus the side effects of the inhalation.
  • Around 7,000 animals died as well Many children were born deformed and future generations continue to experience the horrible side effects.
  • Since a disaster like this had never occurred before and the company involved did not take the proper measures of remediation, Bhopal continues to suffer the environmental contamination produced by the release of MIC. Donations and medical/volunteer assistance has been provided to some of the victims and their families. Monetary compensation has also been provided. Union Carbide accepted responsibility and agreed to a $470 million settlement out of court (which would have been billions had this incident occurred in the US)
