What Are Positive Behavioral Interventions?
Data-driven
Focus on the function of behaviors rather than the structure of behaviors
Use of replacement behaviors reinforced
Natural consequences or imposed consequences that fit the behavior
Takes environment into account

Data-Driven Approach to Behaviors
When behavior needs arise, collecting relevant data is imperative:
Frequency
Duration
Intensity
Time of day
Immediate prior events
Immediate outcomes

Function vs. Structure
Function – the purpose served by the behavior
Structure – what the behavior looks like
Punishing the individual for the structure of the behavior does nothing to address the function served by the behavior
Addressing the function of the behavior is more likely to result in the cessation of inappropriate behavior and the assumption of more appropriate replacement behaviors
Replacement behaviors may have to be taught

Reinforcing the Use of Positive Replacement Behaviors
Verbal praise
Expressing heartfelt appreciation
Pointing out the successes achieved through the use of the appropriate behaviors
Soliciting feedback from the individual about how the replacement behavior is working

Natural Consequences
Occur naturally as a result of the behavior
Not necessarily imposed
Could have been predicted if the individual had thought far enough ahead

Artificial Consequences
Not the same thing as punishment, per se
Work best when made to fit the behavior (i.e., picking up trash after being caught littering)
Should be delivered as soon after the targeted behavior as possible
Should address the harm done by the inappropriate behavior

The Influence of Environment
Over-stimulating
Intimidating
Threatening
Noxious
Allergenic
Unsupportive
Hostile

Students, Parents, & Employees
All aspects of positive behavioral interventions apply to all people
School site administrators have to manage their campuses well
Providing positive behavioral interventions to one group but being punitive with the others is counterproductive

Positive Behavior Support Plans & Intervention Plans
Part of a child’s IEP
Follows data collection, if not full-blown assessment, of the child’s unique behavioral needs
Regulated by the IDEA and applicable state law

Parents
Socio-economic status and cultural influences can impact how they respond to difficult situations
Natural parental instinct to protect their children can cause heightened emotionality
Political beliefs can influence how much trust they put into government officials, such as school site administrators

Personnel
Student needs vs. job security
Differing political views regarding the role of public education
Differing views regarding employee rights and collective bargaining
Lack of understanding of regulatory requirements
