  • How to keep your retail on track over the holidays “It is a real myth that a Bank Holiday means that customers won’t buy or that your retail has to be lower. As long as you still put out the same amount of catalogues, then your retail will still be the same. If you have a holiday or want to take time out with the family or children then simply do a double drop the week before or after your holiday. The only time your retail ever drops is simply because you have not personally put out the same volume of catalogues. Often, Bank Holidays can have a positive effect on retail as people ‘boredom buy’. People sit at home or sit out in the garden, and have more time to browse through the catalogues. So putting more books out over Bank Holidays can really boost your retail. Whether it’s a Bank Holiday or a family holiday all you have to do is plan it. When we got married, we did £2,495 (our average monthly sales) worth of sales around a wedding and a honeymoon simply by planning! And we are already planning our summer holiday for this year, where we will do a whole period of customers in just 13 days. There is an expression which has been bandied about over the years which goes: ‘Ifyour catalogues are in your own home then your shop is closed’. This basic and simple philosophy can often beignored at holiday times by Distributors who wrongly analyse the situation, by thinking that ’people will be away’,’they wont want my catalogue during the holidays’, or ’I don’t want to disturb people whilst they are enjoying theirbreak’. We have always personally catalogued during the holiday periods, and encouraged others to do the samebecause, no matter what time of the year it is, or what day of the week, people will buy from the amazing Kleenezecatalogue. In fact, during the holiday times people have more time to browse the catalogue and are not in the samehurry as normal. You will have heard the expression, ‘to analyse is to paralyse’, so whatever you do, don’t beinfluenced by anything but the basic premise that if you get the catalogues out into someone else’s house, you willget orders!Peter and Myrna Wellock, Silver Senior Executive Distributors “We always stick to our Friday delivery for collection on Monday unless we are away ourselves and then it is Thursday for a Tuesday. We always put out a leaflet on coloured paper, which we will drop through the door separately but at the same time as delivering the catalogue so that people have to read it when they pick the paper off the floor. Our leaflet will read: ‘Special Easter Offer for our loyal customers. A FREE gift for everyone who places an order over the value of £20’. This gift would be something like a line lock (20 in a pack 077461-86 for £3.25), bag clip (20 Writeable Bag clips on a card 081442-86 for £3.95), 10 coloured Bag clips 018058-86 for £3.75, a Duster 033650-86 10 for £4.50 or a scour pad 10 0352823-86 for £3.25. Whilst we get 21% commission off these prices, these sort of gifts are very inexpensive. Even if you get 40 customers spending £20 with you for the Easter week. Many of the Bank Holidays fall on a Monday, which isoften a pick-up day for us, but we carry on and plan our usual pick up. We’ve never experienced any problemsgetting catalogues back, but we do tend to start picking up a little later than usual – say 11am – to give peopletime to get up and put the books out. Likewise if you are putting out your catalogues on a Bank Holiday, don’t goout too early as people are often having a lay in. Bank Holidays are also great for blanket dropping as people areat home to look at the catalogues, especially if they have planned a day out and it rains all day as usual! The othergreat Bank Holiday pastime is gardening, so what a fantastic time for the Spring Special to land on the doormat!It may be worth pointing this out to people if they are out in the garden when you call. If you have planned totake time off over a Bank Holiday, the most important thing is to make sure that you replace this time later orearlier in the Period, so your income is not affected. One way of doing this would be to drop the catalogues onthe Thursday before Easter and pick them up on the Tuesday after - this means you will not have to make any adjustment to your normalroutine.
