ELA 30-1: Tolerance Critical/Analytical Response to Text(s) Literature often explores how competing internal and external demands affect the individual’s ability to pursue personal well-being. In the short story, “On the Rainy River,” Tim O’Brien discovers that, by succumbing to the perceived pressures of society, he cannot find the security he desires. In The Grapes of Wrath many of the central characters are also faced with the competing demands of their own needs and those of society. Steinbeck carefully illustrates the differences between those who act primarily out of self-interest and those who are able to act in the interests of the greater good. Consider how the concept of personal well-being has been reflected and developed in The Grapes of Wrath. Discuss the idea(s) developed by Steinbeck regarding the individual’s ability to pursue personal well-being when responding to competing internal and external demands?
