  2. 2. Introduction Anyone that takes on a running challenge deserves a huge pat on the back. Whether they’re doing a 5k for the first time or taking on their 10th marathon, the training alone is a major commitment – add in a fundraising target and it’s easy to see why some don’t make it to the start line. Sally Chambers Head of customer engagement If any of your supporters are about to take on a running challenge, they’re on course for a major personal achievement. But it’s easy for them to feel a bit fed up of the training schedule and to run out of fundraising ideas. We’re here to help you give them some encouragement and inspiration. Over the last 12 years, we’ve been honoured to support runners with their fundraising and help them achieve things they never thought possible. In this guide we share our top tips and insights for engaging and motivating your fundraisers.
  3. 3. 1. Insights for fundraising success With over a decade’s experience in online fundraising, we’ve got some pretty unique insights that will help your supporters raise more money – from telling you about the optimum moment to start fundraising, to the best time to prompt them after the race.
  4. 4. The early bird catches the worm Our data shows that the earlier someone sets up a JustGiving page, the more they will raise for your cause. Runners who start fundraising six months before an event raise the most, so get your emails and website ready well in advance. Tip: Put a ‘Make a page’ button on your event website and emails, so that people are encouraged to fundraise online for your cause from the very start. Learn more about adding a button to your website and emails Visit just.ly/adding-buttons
  5. 5. The personal touch really counts Encourage your runners to add a personal touch to their fundraising page. Our research shows that adding a target, a picture and a story all help runners raise more. Set a target Runners with a target on their fundraising pages raise a third more on average than those without. Give them a picture Runners with a picture on their page raise almost a third more than runners without one.

  8. 8. Encourage social story-telling In 2013, three out of 10 London marathon runners added updates to their fundraising page. They raised 22% more than runners who didn’t. Tip: Encourage your runners to share their training progress on their fundraising page. Each time they add an update, we’ll automatically prompt them to share it on social media. Our analysis shows that each share of an update can bring back £12 in donations from family and friends who have seen the update on Facebook. Share worth £12

  10. 10. It ain’t over, ‘til it’s over Just because the event is finished doesn’t mean fundraising has to end too. After last year’s London marathon, 17% of donations came in after marathon day. Make sure you go back and congratulate your runners and ask them to make a final push for donations on social media. It’s also a good time to ask people to sign up for next year’s event.
  11. 11. What’s my motivation? Many of your runners may be fundraising in memory of a loved one. With JustGiving you can find out whether your fundraisers are in memory motivated, so you can offer them tailored supporter care. Last year 12% of London marathon runners on JustGiving were fundraising in memory. Our research shows that in memory fundraising pages can raise up to £700 more than a standard fundraising page, so make sure you look after your in memory runners. 12. 12. 2. Content & support for your runners We provide unique, ready-touse content and support for your runners, with zero effort on your part. “ JustGiving was inspiring and motivating. They really helped me with training for my first marathon. Alex, Brighton marathon runner 2013 ”
  13. 13. Training plans and tips from the pros It’s really important to help your runners stay fit and healthy during their training. The training plans and tips from our resident experts RunningWithUs help them get to the start line, which means you can be confident they’ll raise more money. Tip: Tell your runners about our running hub. It’s a free resource packed full of useful content to help them with their training and fundraising. Visit justgiving.com/en/running
  14. 14. Tips and ideas straight to their inbox We put together bespoke emails for your runners for major events. Our targeted email series for last year’s London marathon helped 701 extra fundraisers to start receiving donations. Recipients were 200% more likely to receive a donation versus the control group.
  15. 15. A free poster for your fundraising packs We’ve got 10 simple tips to help people raise more money on their JustGiving page. We’ve popped them on a poster so you can email it to them or add it to your fundraising packs. Download your free poster and send it as part of your communication cycle
  16. 16. Buttons and posters to promote their fundraising We give runners ‘sponsor me’ buttons that they can put on their email signatures or blogs. Plus a poster they can put up in the office or in their local shops. They’re really simple but effective ways of helping them tell their families, friends and colleagues about their fundraising. Your runners can download a ‘sponsor me’ button in their JustGiving account. Send them this link which explains how to do it: http://just.ly/add-badge Download the poster here or send them this link: http://just.ly/fundraising-poster
  17. 17. 3. Digital toolkit We have all the tools to make sure your runners receive the most donations, wherever they are and however they want. “ Thanks to the many innovative and effective fundraising tools JustGiving has created, both on the web and on mobile, our supporters have raised significantly more than ever before. Sue Blunt Senior challenge events manager, Macmillan Cancer Support ”
  18. 18. Mobile optimisation Our fundraising pages have been optimised so they look great on a mobile phone. And we’ve created a donation process that means people can donate in just one touch or click, making it easier and more enjoyable than ever to give on the go. Easy to donate. Easy to share
  19. 19. Social media Our site is fully integrated with Facebook and Twitter, so that every time your runner updates their page or someone donates, they’re prompted to share it on social media. Why is this important? Enabling people to share their donations creates a viral effect. Each share encourages more people to give and is worth an extra £5 donation to your charity. In 2012, post-donation sharing on Facebook generated an additional £1.4m in donations to charity.
  20. 20. International giving By enabling people to donate in their local currency, we believe more people than ever will be inspired to give and help make a real difference. People can donate in eight different currencies on JustGiving. For this year’s London marathon we saw donations come in from 137 different countries. And in the UK, although most donations came from the South East, people in the Channel Islands are the most generous.
